My iPad New camera won't focus when taking a picture or video!!

That sounds like a defect in your iPad. I suggest you show it to an Apple Store Genius. If the Genius can't fix it, you may get a replacement iPad on the spot.

If there is no Apple Store near you, look for an Apple Authorized Repair Center. There may be one in your city. <Apple Authorized Repair Centers>

Yes, I am sure that being out of focus beyond six inches is a defect.

There is another problem that you may encounter which is due to noise appearing as grain when there is not enough light for a useable picture. The "cure" would be to turn on more lights. The same thing might be true for focusing, which also requires enough light to function. See if it works better outdoors with daylight illumination.

Other unusual problems that have been reported for the iPad 3, have responded to a reset (reboot) of the iPad. Hold both the Home and Sleep buttons for several seconds until the Apple logo appears. Ignore the "Slide to power off" arrow. The iPad will restart after a couple of minutes. Resetting this way will not hurt anything, and sometimes clears up mysterious problems.

Got the same problem with non-working autofocus on new retina iPad. Unfortunately this did not help either so looks like it's a warranty return for me.

I've tried tapping the lens but that hasn't worked either.

Restored iOS5.1 to factory condition didn't fix it either.

You can tell its not working because the focus does not "hunt" when tapping on objects, and does not get a lock on objects that it really should be able to (and have compared with my brother's retina iPad). Auto white balance and auto exposure continue to function.

Autofocus failure

Same here. My new iPad 3 will not focus. Tapping helps but it still reverts to not being able to focus. That's it. I am going to the Apple Store tomorrow and get it exchanged as it is only one week old.

I tried all the above solutions but looks like it is a defective unit.

Should the exchanged unit fail as well, then I may have to deal with the temptation to buy Asus Prime Quadcore with 32 Gig and micro SD card slot on it.

If you can show it to an Apple Store Genius, you may get a replacement iPad on the spot.

If you take it to an Apple Authorized Repair Center, they may be able to do a simple repair. If not, you may have to wait for a replacement to be shipped.

FIX I Held down the camera button for 3-4 seconds while pointing iPad camera at a close object. Using reinstalled iPad camera app. It took about 24 photos very fast. Then when I tried the camera again, it started focusing on close objects as it should. Works fine now. Never worked properly in the past. Got the idea from the link below.

I'm having problems with my autofocus as well. Mine doesn't focus on objects that are near. It only focuses on objects 2 feet away from me. I've tried to reset all settings, even tried wiping the lens and tapping on objects that I wanted to focus on. Nothing works.

I tried taking pictures of people's faces and it comes out blurry/ grainy. (adequate lighting was used)

I'm so disappointed with the new iPad.

I have the same issue with my new ipad, however it is intermittent. Sometime it works, sometimes it doesnt.

So i guess the solution here is to bring it to an apple service center?

I have the same problem the focus just hunts and if you're lucky to catch at the right point you get a good picture. Why are there never any solutions on here, only people with the same problem?
