I chased mine up and finally got hold of someone in America (I'm in New Zealand) who was phenomenally nice, they replaced the logic board. however... it's doing it again. I'll contact him again about it.
A year ago my 2011 MacBook Pro had similar symptoms and it took going to the Apple Store three seperate times for them to figure out what it was.
At first my laptop would shut of unexpectedly once every few days. Then it got increasingly frequent to the point where if I lifted it up, it would "click" and shut off. It would only turn back on if the power chord was in. My battery power was fine and the specs and prelimenary checks they do at the apple Store showed nothing. Every time I turned it back on, the date and time was reset and it wouldn't allow me onto some websites. They did system resets, reset the SMC, and I did an entire wipe of the computer. I told the guy this and insisted it must be a hardward issue, but he still just tinkered with it and tried to send me home. The instant I picked it up, it shut off again. For 24hours my laptop was under their "stress tests" and was doing fine. It wasn't until I spoke with someone knowledgeable and filled him in on information the other guy didn't write down, that we finally got to the bottom of it.
The issue was the hard drive. All I needed was a new hard drive. I tell this lengthly story so you can know the exact symptoms my laptop was having and also be aware that some people at the Apple Store can be a pain in the ***, and that they aren't always very helpful. You may need to be pushy. If you are experiencing these symptoms, it is most likely a hardware issue. My exact symptoms pointed directly to the hard drive.
I am now experiencing what I think is the same thing... However, it has been a whole year since I've had any problems.
Good luck!
I had the same problem on my 08 Macbook, after resetting smc, pram etc.
Reinstalled OS x, I found out my power button was sticking down, so the
computer would constantly just shut off! Cleaned the power button, it has worked
perfectly since!
I performed the SMC Reset and it worked wonderfully! I had been having problems for a long, long time. The power supply light would not always come on (preventing recharge) and I kept crashing when viewing any type of video.
So far, this is working! Happy Days!!!! Thanks so much!
I have exactly these symptoms on my 2009 MacBook Pro. Did you ever get to the bottom of the matter with your laptop? I've actually replaced my logic board but the problem has persisted.
I narrowed my problem to heat. My left fan is not working. Until I put a new one in, I watch how many apps I have open at the same time and I don't view videos of length. I found smcFan Control on this forum and it gives you the rpms of the fans (my left is at 0), as well as the temperature.
Thanks a lot for this! I'll check out the smcFan Control & see if that is my problem, too. The symptomatic similarities are uncanny so there is at least a chance!
My macbook keeps doin the same thing, but happens when the charger is plugged in. Anyone have any suggestions?
been having the same issue with mbp, will just shut down after around hour of use or if i pick it up from bottom there is a click sometimes, and often shuts down, under left conrner where the battery and harddrive meet i have taken it in 4 times now and the guy says its a software issue , did a stress test and found no issues with hardware .but i will have him sent it to apple as he does not know how to fix my issue.
Check to see if your firmware is up-to-date. This article from Apple helped me when this was happening to me:
