Canon Pixma MP620, wireless, & Lion

Hi all

I have a Canon Pixma MP620 that I have not bothered using until now. Rather, have not bothered trying to use until now. I'm running 10.7.3 on a MacBookPro. And I just updated the Canon driver under Software Update

I can print only if it's connected via a USB cable. If I unplug the cable, I still see my printer in System Prefs/Print and Scan, with a little green dot, saying Idle. But if Itry to print anything, even a a page with a couple of words on it, nothing happens. The Canon MP620 print queue shows up inthe Dock, Status says printing, and the horizontal blue and white barber pole progress bar is chugging along, but nothing happens. It's not that I'm too far from the printer; about 18 inches to be exact, the length of the USB cable. I've never bothered to try and print wirelessly before because I figured it would take eons and be a pain in the hole to configure, and so far I think I'm right. Have I missed something here? That I can see the printer while not physically tethered to it would, I assume, tell me the wireless connectivity is there. Why, then, can't I get a page off the thing unless I plug in the USB cable?

Is there some way to wirelessly ping the scanner?

Thanks in advance.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 2.53 GHz 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

A few things to note;

1. The print queue for a USB printer cannot be used for a wireless connected printer. The print queue that you have in Print & Scan will be for the USB connected MP620. If you disconnect the USB cable and try to print to this print queue then it will not print. So you would also need to have a print queue in Print & Scan for the networked printer and this can only be created after you have the MP620 connected to your wireless router.

2. To connect the MP620 to your wireless network you need to set your network settings into the printer. I don't know if this can be done via the operation panel on the printer. If not, then you can use the Canon IJ Network tool. To use the tool, the printer needs to connected to the Mac via USB cable. You can then open the utility via the Utility tab under Options & Supplies for the USB connected printer to connect it to your wireless router.

3. Once the printer is connected to your wireless network you can then create another printer in Print & Scan. You do this via the Default tab of the Add Printer window, noting the scanner is a separate entry to the printer (where the USB connected device has the printer & scanner under the same entry). With the printer and scanner created, you ensure you select this network connected printer in the print dialog rather than the USB connected printer. To make things easier, you can rename the printers in Print & Scan so that you can easily tell which printer you are selecting in the print dialog.

Hope this helps to get you started. Reply if you need more assistance.

CANON PIXMA 620 WIRELESS SET-UP for LION MOUNTAIN LION . STEP BY STEP

You were fooled and followed the Pixma 620 Macintosh Wireless Setup material that came with your printer until it almost broke you. DO NOT install disk- too many drivers cause problems. Just plug in your printer and Apple will install latest software.... but it won't work except with a USB....😢

Step 1 You have looked at the Canon Site.😕 They fail to tell you what you need and there are so many choices of drivers and software to choose from yet no directions - not even in the "help" section which only gives you a legal disclaimer.👿...You search the Internet and find conflicting answers... ℹ⚠

Step 2 Click on Black Apple (upper left icon)...System Prefs on your Mac... Select Printers... Select your Printer and confirm your Canon, now tethered by USB, is using the latest software ...Driver Ver. 10.67.1.0... by default you should if not download from Canon. MP620 series CUPS Printer Driver Ver. 10.67.1.0 (OS X 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8)... Wonder why this is true... but you still cannot use wireless... and promise next week to come with an answer to achieve world peace in your lifetime.

Step 3 You are using current driver but still stuck with USB...Download theCanon IJ Network Tool Ver. 4.1.0 for Intel Mac .... Ignore the rest.. they will miraculously appear...

Step 4 You download but do a spotlight search for Canon IJ and you cannot find it...😢.You sort downloads to most recent... it is not there... it is hiding.... Go to applications... then Canon utilities folder then IJ Network Tool folder then.... Canon IJ Network Tool App.... Double click and it will guide you... sort of... then it will have you select your wireless access point... wait... wait... then it is done... but not really...

MOST IMPORTANT STEP.Turn off your printer (no, I am not kidding) unplug the USB. Turn the printer on.

Step 4 Click on Black Apple (upper left icon) Sys Prefs. Click Printers... Your Canon Printer is offline..keep calm.😐

Click + symbol in lower left to add printer - only scanner will appear...hold your breath... wait...wait then exhale.. ADD first the printer (Bonjour) rename it from the cumbersome IP address to Wireless 620... It appears in your printer column.. Click on it and go to utilities tab and press test page.It works. Now click + and add the scanner (Bonjour) for the same printer renaming it as wireless 620 Scanner... DO NOT delete Canon USB printer or Scanner USB which are offline - for some reason it screws up your ability to reconnect to wireless and you will have to start all over again in USB mode.

Breathe a sigh of relief that I took the time after I figured it out to put it out there...🙂😎

I'm having trouble downloading from the "Canon IJ Network Tool Ver. 4.1.0 for Intel Mac" trouble link. It I click on the agree button on the bottom and nothing happens. Any suggestions? I was so pumped for this to work. I tried searching Canon's site for the download file name and that yielded no results. I also tried looking under apps for Canon utility thinking that the download may have been really sneaky and it wasn't there. When I click on accept it doesn't even go up to the right corner download area.

Any help?

Thanks!

Hello. I had a similar problem that started suddenly last week. Now, whenever I try to print to my Canon Pixma MP620 printer I get a popup that says The printer is not connected, under which there is a grey moving line, beneath which it says Printing - the printer is offline.

When this first happened I decided to delete and reinstall the printer using your instructions. The reinstallation worked perfectly. However, when I tried to print again I had the same problem.

I have an iMac OSX 10.8.5. As I mentioned, this only started happening suddenly about two days ago; before that there was never a problem.

Does anyone have any idea what I can do to have my computer and printer communicate again? Do you think there is an update that happened behind-the-scenes that messed this up? Any other suggestions?

Thank you.
