How do I convert video files into a compatible file type for my ipad?

I'm new to the iPad 3 so I apologize if this question has been answered ad nauseum. However, it seems like most, if not all of the video files that I've tried to put on my iPad from my Sony Vaio (using Windows 7) aren't comptabile with the iPad 3.

My question is, I figured that as long as the iPad has been out now, someone must've come up with a way to make more video files compatible with the iPad 3 and I was just curious about these two quick questions:

(1.) What video files are compatible with the iPad 3?

(2.) And also more importantly, how do I convert video files into a playable video type on my iPad 3?

Again, I'm using the iPad 3 and my laptop is a Sony Vaio using Windows 7

Thanks to Meneisys - I'll now try iVI to see if this converts the AVHCD, via a MacPro or similar. I still don't have a suitable program to use on a PC and Windows 7. Freemaker with Windows 7 does the conversion to MP4 but even though these files upload to iTunes on the PC, they're still not right. The 'convert to iPad format' on iTunes refuses to do anything saying that the MP4 file is 'already in the correct format'. Still complicated ...

iPad 3 supports file formats specially designed for iPad 3. In some cases, it also supports the standard file formats like MP4, H.264, ALAC, MP3.

There is a Total Video Converter enabling to convert video formats to iPad 3 compatible files formats to play videos in various formats on iPad 3. Bigasoft Toatl Video Converter can convert MP4 videos ad more to iPad 3 MPEG 4 Video specially for iPad 3.

I would suggest you use Video Converter Ultimate or other professional converter rather thatn use a freemaker to convert AVHCD videos to MP4. It's more stable, efficient and powerful. Whatever format you want such as MP4, MOV, 3D or 4K, you can have it all. I've used it to convert non-iPad compatible formats to MP4 and it works well. More details you can search online.
