May 11, 2012 2:25 AM in response to tillathenunby BenfromHove,Hi all. I resolved my lack of connection issue by buying a second-hand Airport Extreme from eBay. Seriously. Plugged it in to my BT Home Hub, changed my WiFi connection from the Hub to the Airport and now it works like a dream. No dropouts except for when the Home Hub overrides the network connection and forces my iMac to move from my new network to the Home Hub.
I've just had BT Infinity installed so, after the 'settling down' period I'm going to drop the Home Hub completely and just use the AIrport.
As far as the update goes, the replacement ATV that I got from the Apple store has the older OS so I'm unsure if I should update or not. I was never entirely sure that it wasn't the new OS that screwed my connection in the first place.

May 12, 2012 11:26 AM in response to declanhoggby merrittislandmike,Sorry,, but I agree completely this is not an networking issue at all. Everything worked fine for more than a year on the old ATV and for months on the new ATV. Then all of a sudden, software update and the Sharing keeps dropping or whatever but unless I shutdown iTunes and restart it I cannot review content or play anything after about an hour or two. That just *****, not what I expect from my Apple products at all. The latest patch/update did nothing to resolve this issue for me......

May 13, 2012 2:14 PM in response to merrittislandmikeby zinto,Just updated ATV and Itunes software, did not fix the problem. Sharing lasts a few minutes per attempt. After the video stops playing it returns to the home screen within ATV without any kind of error message.

May 14, 2012 1:53 AM in response to zintoby BenfromHove,Guess I won't be updating then. Zinto, what setup do you have? I've read various posts and conecting up an Airport (of one kind or another) does seem to be a solution. It certainly worked for me.

May 14, 2012 2:59 AM in response to tillathenunby esperides,With the last ATV update my ATV is playing wonderfull, without any interruption. So for me, Apple found a solution for the problem with homesharing. Very glad that everything is working now.

May 14, 2012 4:06 AM in response to esperidesby BenfromHove,Does nayone know if it's possible to either switch off the update message (I keep nearly agreeing by mistake) or to restore from the previous OS? I'd like to try updating but I don't want it to foul up my connection.

May 14, 2012 4:30 AM in response to BenfromHoveby zinto,BenfromHove, I'm using a PC with a Netgear router. I got some good results by having the ATV look for the 5 GHz signal (which was set to a fixed channel) instead of the 2.4 GHz signal (which allowed channel to vary). Next I will test whether it was the 5 GHz or the fixed channel that helped, but in the new setup the whole program downloads quickly based on the progress of the buffer indicator when you pause the video from ATV. Hoping this is really a fix!

May 16, 2012 6:43 AM in response to merrittislandmikeby Goles,I, too, hit restore and painstakingly reset everything. No luck. As not as savvy a technician as some on this post, i find it more than a little frustrating that this product, purported to be so easy, requires port triage, proxy adjustments, firewall disabling, and purchase of additional apple products - wait, not at all surpised by that.
And, Apples open mockery of other platforms and applications requiring SW updates. At least the other vendors respond to issues and push updates. It seems from the forums half the ATV users cannot use the product - or not without constant frustration and electronics triage.
needs to be fixed. it should work like every other bloody device i have operating in fine form on my network.

May 16, 2012 8:11 PM in response to declanhoggby jolenn,I am also having the same problem. I can watch netflix and youtube on ATV, but I can not stream music to ATV via iTunes Airplay. It is definelty an AppleTV problem as streaming via airport express to other speakers works flawlessly. Such a disappointment.

May 17, 2012 10:22 AM in response to declanhoggby Shay44,I am having the same issue with my apple tv's. My theory is that ATV does not play well with DTV whole home DVR service. Do any one have the same systems? I do not want to set up two networks unless i can confirm this theory with other cases.

May 17, 2012 11:03 AM in response to Shay44by Marty Frasu,It's not your router, netowk or wireless channel.
You can mess with that stuff all day long.
The REAL problem is with the Home Sharing function in iTunes.
I have had Apple TV's for years and never had this problem with the same Airport extemes.
There was an iTunes update that is causing the problem.
Why do i think it's itunes?
When I look at my iPhone and iPad, I can see the apple TVs on the network.
The shared iTunes library is gone. If I quit and restart iTunes, it re-appears on the network.
Apple you have enough money and resources to fix this.
iTunes od one of your premiere products.
Fix this.
I have ran out of patience.
My whole family uses the shared library, I am sick of restarting iTunes everytime somebody wants to watch a show.

May 18, 2012 8:10 AM in response to Shay44by Marty Frasu,Yes, I have a cable modem from Time Warner with a static IP.
I have had Apple TVs since they came out.
I have never had this home sharing problem since a recent iTunes update.
I feel sorry for people thinking their setup is to blame.
Spending hours reinstalling software and changing network settings.
It should simply work, it did up until recently.
It's not your fault none of you.
I wrote to Apple feedback and reported this problem.
As I said in my last post I have no patience for this kind of problem.
I could see it coming from a smaller company, but Aplle has set some pretty high standards.
I expect their equipment to work.

May 18, 2012 10:24 AM in response to Marty Frasuby Shay44,Thank you and I agree.
My home sharing seems to drop overnight, i am trying a new work around until apple gets off of its ***.
I am setting my mac file server to automatically shut down late at night and rebooot in the morning with itunes set to open at boot.
Hopefully this will cut down on the number of times i have to run to my itunes file server when someone wants to watch a shared movie.

May 19, 2012 10:15 AM in response to BenfromHoveby merrittislandmike,Funny, I have an Airport Extreme that was working just fine. That is until the update. Apple issue, not a network issue!!!
