Bookmarks bar in iPad Safari

In iMac Safari, I have a nice thin grey line of defaulted Apple, etd. links. Kinda nice, but I would prefer to use the precious real estate for other things.

In iPad, the support links suggest turning it on in Settings, Safari, General, and 'Always show Bookmarks Bar'.. Well it is on. Still no bookmarks bar.

I was able to bang around and get a folder added to Bookmarks. I have only a couple Apple site links in there, but don't yet see a way to add links. I will.

The folder is now displayed up there now taking up more precious real estate on this miniature screen. Tapping on it gives me the 2 Apple sites,

I would rather just have a single line of 8 or so really favorite sites lined up there like shown in the posts provided by others here.

Please, Can anyone tell me how to just have the line there without folders?

Thanx,,, Bill

If you turned on the Always Show Bookmarks Bar - you have to add the bookmarks to that particular folder in the Safari Bookmarks as well.

In Safari - go to the web site that you want to add to the Bookmarks Bar. Tap the Arrow icon next to the url field. Select - Add Bookmark. Then select Bookmarks Bar from the next window.

If you dont see the Bookmarks Bar folder as a selection - tap the bottom folder that shows in that window - and then all of the other bookmarks folder should appear. Select bookmarks bar from there - then tap save.

To add links tap the icon of the box with curved arrow next to the URL input area. Tap Add Bookmark. Name your bookmark then use the Lowers part of that box to navigate through your bookmark bar folders to select where you want the bookmark to be located.

If there are bookmarks you no longer want tap the open book icon, navigate to the folder you want to edit then tap edit at the top of the list and delete those bookmarks you don't want.

Thanks, Ralph and Demo,

This takes a few steps, but not beyond my ability. 🙂 But I am not happy with the iPad User Guide for IOS 5.. They just say to do the first 2 steps you mention and leave you hanging, while showing the end result of the next 2 steps. Poor publishing!!!

I still have a problem: In the efforts to get here, I made a Bookmarks folder. Now that shows on my bar taking up space. How can I delete a folder?

Thanks, Bill

Glad you got your question answered. I prefer to give up the space of the bookmarks bar so that I can have a whole row of bookmark folders there each one having a group of bookmarks in the topics of the folder. It takes me a lot less time to tap on a folder in the bookmarks bar then tap the bookmark. Going to the bookmark symbol and navigating to the correct bookmark is more cumbersome for me. But each of us can use the methods that works best.

Thanks, I agree about the folders. That is if I have MANY bookmarks to have available. I don't now, but will build more.

The idea of having about 8 or so laid out there takes only 1 tap to go to it. I tried that and found that amazon and facebook (and others) have set up their link info to add sales words to the bookmark name, taking up more of my bar space. I'll fix that by the folder method you described. I'll keep those who only use one word on the bar for the fast ones.

I'm still mad at Apple for not including the information you gave in the published User Guide.

Thanks again!

Bill
