Will an ELSA TNT2 16G AGP video card run on my PowerMac G4?

I just bought a PowerMac G4 from the Ohio Thrift Store in Columbus for $20.20, and it didn't come with a video card. So will the above mentioned card work?

Hello, I doubt it, seems it's a Windows PC card, & no idea if it can be flashed with Mac ROMs needed to run it on a Mac.

Mac Video cards are not plentiful.

See japamacs page here on the best AGP cards for G4s & G5s...

Rated slowest on top, fastest on bottom, hopefully japamac will drop in shortly.

FYI,

You won't find Mac video cards or "Flashed" Mac video cards in any ole' local computer store or retail electronics/computer store.

Many of these card are found online. Usually on eBay.

Also, FYI ,

If this is a 300 MHz CPU model PowerMac, this not a G4, but a G3 PowerMac.

There is no 300 MHz PowerMac G4 model.

Is the case a bright blue and white?

If it is, this is a PowerMac Blue and White G3.

Finding compatible cards and/or PCI video cards for this model PowerMac is hard , but these can, also, be found on eBay.

Here is a PCI video card that will work in your G3

Also, if decide to use a PCI video card, to improve the performance of the PCI bus, there was a firmware update to improve the performance of the PCI bus

If your PowerMac is slow, more RAM may help.

PowerMac Blue and White can take up to 1 GB of RAM.

You can also still find RAM for this model Mac here.

Also, what OS are you running?

This model iMac can run up to OS X 10.4.11 Tiger.

OS X 10.2 Jaguar and OS X 10.3 Pamther ran best on these PowerMac models, but there is very little support for OS X 10.2 or OS X 10.3 Panther any longer. OS X Tiger is still being, somewhat, supported by third party developers, but it will definitely not run as well, as you will be taxing the OS with only a 300 MHz PowerPC CPU.

Older version of OS X 10 maybe found a site like Amazon, you need to find full OEM Apple retail versions OS X 10.3 or OS X 10.4 Tiger for a, somewhat, reasonable price. The pricing for both OS X 10.3 and OS X 10.4 will be high for these if they are new in a unopened box. If you decide to purchase a used, open box disc, inquire from the seller if the discs are in good shape and not all scratched up on the read side of the disc.

Another source that you could try is calling Apple directly at 1-800-MYAPPLE. Ask for software sales and tell them you are looking for Replacement OS system restore discs for your PowerMac G3.

You will need to locate your PowerMac's serial number and give this to the sales rep so they can determine what software your PowerMac needs. If they tell you that your PowerMac can use OS X 10.4 Tiger, take that disc/s.

There will be a nominal charge of less than $20 dollars for processing of the disc and shipping.

Good Luck!

Here is another video card that I am relatively sure will, also, work in your PowerMac G3

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ATI-Radeon-9200-Mac-Edition-PCI-Video-Card-100-436011-12 8MB-/111095082526?pt=US_Video_Capture_TV_Tuner_Cards&hash=item19ddc86e1e

For the Mac PCI video cards in your model PowerMac, you need to use the only 66 MHz PCI slot.

Not sure which one this is in a Blue and White PowerMac G3, but this is the one to use for PCI video cards.

It's a G4 not a G3 😝. I already found one that works though. As for the system, I'm running tiger, but when the original owner bought it I beleive it was running Jaguar or Panther, because there was an install file in the downloads folder. I'll look into the RAM situation. Thank you so much for all your help and advice guys!! ^_^

Btw, I'm too lasy to pull the card out and post specs and stuff. So whenever I decide to pull it out I will. 😝

If you will, so we have exact and accurate info about your PowerMac, in case you run into other issues in the future, go to the Apple symbol in the far upper left of OS X main menu bar.

Click on the Symbol.

The click the About this Mac menu option.

A small pop-up window appears with some basic info.

There is a button that says More Info, click on this.

A large window opens telling you everything about your PowerMac.

Please cut and paste this info into a reply here editing out your PowerMac's serial number.

All of this info will tell you and us exactly what PowerMac you have.

I stress, again, there is no PowerMac G4 that has a 300 MHz CPU.

G4 PowerMacs started with a base 350 MHz CPU.

Also, in this large window, there should be a Graphics category section that you can also click a disclosure arrow to the left of, that will give you all of the graphics info about your card.

Please post this info as well.

Also, please edit your Apple info to include some of this computer info as part of your Apple ID so it appears when you post new threads and replies.

All of this info will tell you and all of us here exactly what PowerMac you are dealing with.

ThanX

The cards I posted are, probably, faster VRAM cards than the one you have found and installed and works.

A Faster GPU will also, help with a lot of graphics issues that may be one of the issues slowing down your PowerMac.

And these will work in one of the PowerMac's PCI slots.

I'll ask this one more time, also..

Was the card you purchased an AGP card?

If it was an AGP card then, yes this is a PowerMac G4, but the CPU must be faster than 300 MHz.

Does the case appear very bright blue in the corners and front panel and bright white overall with "G3" written on one side?

Or is the case dark grayish blue innthe corners and front panel and sort of grayish color overall and possibly "G4" written on one side?

Will an ELSA TNT2 16G AGP video card run on my PowerMac G4?
