Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Weird, have you ever heard of Mail doing this before?

I'm using Mail version 2.1.3. I have 3 IMAP mail accounts. Mail shows 3 separate SENT mail boxes, and 3 separate INBOXES.

The 3 Sent mail boxes appear as sub-folders of SENT.

Today one of those sent sub-folders, let's call it 'iHope', vanished as a sub-folder of SENT and now appears down below on the left as '@iHope'. Mousing over this a tooltip says "Contains mailboxes stored remotely on imap (name of isp)".

Mousing over one of the other sent mail boxes (that's still a sub-folder of SENT) the tooltip says "Contents stored on server. Name on server: INBOX/Sent". That mailbox is on the same server as the iHope mailboxes

Any idea what's happened? Or what this means? And, of course, how can I revert Mail to it's previous situation?

Thanks,

iHope

1. As I understand it, POP Mailboxes use the "On My Mac" moniker, because they normally are not left on the Server, & IMAP is not considered "On My Mac", since they should always be available on the server.

2. There are differences here, the @ ones have additional things like "To Do" & some Boxes I put there that do not fall under the Inbox, Sent, Junk, Trash ones above.

My concern is to ensure that I have access to all mail sent and received, year after year. I don't want to depend on other people's servers - what just happened to my ISP's server is an example. I'm going to create folders "On My Mac" and copy mail sent and received into them. That way if anything happens to any of the mailboxes online, copies will always be available in Mail.

Thanks for your assistance,

Ok, good advice.

When I asked if there was a difference in status between a Sent sub-folder in SENT and a Sent sub-folder in 'iHope' i meant is one safer (more secure, less vulnerable) than the other?

Or is there no difference, in which case what's the point of reverting to the configuration Mail had before?

Thanks,

BDAqua,

Some good news! I sent an email from iHope, the first since this issue began, and Mail created a mailbox for it in the same place it was before (as a sub-folder of SENT).

This new iHope sent mailbox contains just the one sent message. Shall I copy into it all the others from the '@iHope' sent mailbox? Or will that create a problem on the server?

Yes, I'd move them.

Unfortunately it may not be that simple.

Before moving them I decided to check online and see how my Webmail account was looking, and found that the email I sent yesterday was not in the "Sent objects" folder with all the others! Instead it appears in a newly created sub-folder of INBOX, called "Sent". (How crazy is that?).

If in Mail on my computer I move the sent emails to the correct iHope sent mailbox, will they end up in the wrong place in the Webmail account? Will this create a new long-term problem? I've written to the ISP for advice.

What's confusing? Please refer to my last couple of postings. I've reported that the new mailbox (with only one message in it) was created automatically by Mail.

The following is about the way my Webmail account looks on the ISP server:

Is it clear now?

I'm not able to get a clear, overall, complete picture of both, sorry.

Ok here is the overall picture...

1) Mail on my computer is exactly as described in my first posting, except that the sent mailbox that vanished is now back where it was and contains the one email sent 2 days ago. This new mailbox, as you're aware, was created automatically.

2) In my Webmail account online (on the ISP website) the email sent 2 days is not in the "Sent objects" folder with all the others. Instead it appears in a newly created sub-folder of INBOX, called "Sent".

3) On my computer, if I move all the sent messages currently in "@iHope" (as described in the first posting) to where they were before (to the automatcally created mailbox) then there could be a problem in the online Webmail account. If moved, those messages, instead of correctly being in the "Sent objects" folder, will be in the newly created sub-folder of INBOX, called "Sent" (as described in point 2 above). This doesn't make sense to me and I've written to the ISP for advice as to how it the issue can be resolved.

4) This means that for the moment in Mail I don't think I can move the old sent message to where they were before, as you've suggested.

Do you have the picture now?

It's clearer yes, but I guess we need to hear from your ISP, perhaps when it was messed up they changed something that affect the way IMAP is being interpreted, they should be a Mirror of each other, except the way Mail combines say Inboxes into what looks like one folder.

Did we try Syncronize account yet? (no way to search more than one page at a time hear).

BDAqua,

Just to update you. The ISP acknowledges there is an issue - Webmail (online) is not mirroring Mail (on my computer). As you know, I wrote to them 6 April and the problem has yet to be resolved, 9 days later. You maybe begin to see why I don't have too much faith in 'clouds' etc.

I originally wrote to the ISP that

Following the Webmail connectivity issue of 2 April, sent messages no longer appear in the Webmail "Sent objects" folder. They now appear in a sub-folder of INBOX. Please advise how this can be corrected, so that all sent mail can appear as usual in "Sent objects".

The ISP replied 11 April saying the issue had been fixed. To test this I sent an email to see how it would appear in Webmail, and reported to the ISP that

Unfortunately the issue has not been corrected! I just sent an email. It now appears in a sub-folder of INBOX (??) and not as it should in "Sent objects". Why? Please advise how this can be corrected, so that all sent mail can appear as usual in "Sent objects".

ISP support then advised that the matter was being 'escalated'. When I hear further I'll report it. If you know anyone with a particular expertise in this area I'd sure welcome any advice they may be able to offer.

Thanks,

iHope
