Weird, have you ever heard of Mail doing this before?

I'm using Mail version 2.1.3. I have 3 IMAP mail accounts. Mail shows 3 separate SENT mail boxes, and 3 separate INBOXES.

The 3 Sent mail boxes appear as sub-folders of SENT.

Today one of those sent sub-folders, let's call it 'iHope', vanished as a sub-folder of SENT and now appears down below on the left as '@iHope'. Mousing over this a tooltip says "Contains mailboxes stored remotely on imap (name of isp)".

Mousing over one of the other sent mail boxes (that's still a sub-folder of SENT) the tooltip says "Contents stored on server. Name on server: INBOX/Sent". That mailbox is on the same server as the iHope mailboxes

Any idea what's happened? Or what this means? And, of course, how can I revert Mail to it's previous situation?

Thanks,

iHope

BDAqua, thanks for your message. However....

Please note, the problem is that Webmail (online) is not mirroring Mail. The 'bad behaviour' described in my last post is on the Webmail server. Mail, on the other hand, is 'behaving well.'

I don't see how a rule in Mail could fix it. If anything changing the preferences in Webmail is more likely to be the answer, no? Not that I'd know what to change, which is why I'm hoping the ISP can offer advice.

Do you agree? Or am I missing something?

The ISP still haven't got back to me.

As you know, Webmail (online) is currently not saving sent messages in the right place - instead of the usual "Sent objects" folder it's saving in a newly-created folder which is a sub-folder of INBOX. All the old sent messages are still in the "Sent objects" folder. The situation is clearly wrong.

How can it be corrected? Is the answer with the ISP at the server end? Or is there something I can do my end? In trying to figure this out I came across an old discussion

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/865211

Someone asked: "In Mail, how do I tell my IMAP account what folder to store sent mail in on the IMAP server?" Ernie Stamper's answer was "Click on the Sent folder, then click Mailbox in the Menubar, place cursor on Use This Mailbox For, and choose Sent, which you should find in black type." It worked.

Do you think it could work here too?

I'm still not sure of the structure in WebMail

I hope the following 3 images can clarify what the problem is. Normally Webmail appears like this:

User uploaded file

After the Webmail connectivity issue of 2 April was cleared up sent messages no longer appeared in the "Sent objects" folder. They now appeared in a sub-folder of INBOX. This sub-folder contained 3 new sent messages. The old sent messages were (and still are) in the "Sent object" folder. Obviously all sent mail should be together in the same folder, "Sent objects".

The ISP wrote 11 April saying the issue had been fixed. To test this I sent an email to see how it appeared in Webmail. The new email appeared on its own in a "Sent" folder as a sub-folder of INBOX. And the 3 messages previously in this folder now appeared on their own in a newly-created sub-folder of "Sent objects" called "Sent". Here's what it looks like:

That's the current situation. How crazy is that?! Have you got the picture now?

ps - Is Ernie Stamper still around to offer help?

I'm keeping a close eye on this one because a very similar thing happened to me yesterday.

I keep a fairly exhaustive set of folders & subfolders in Mail locally on my mac.

Yesterday, I went to create a new sub-folder & all the folders momentarily turned into the "grey earth @" icons & then went back to normal, except that I now have one of these grey icons at the bottom of the folder hierarchy with the same name as my dot mac account. It contains an "archive" folder & a "junk" folder.

It did take with it one seemingly random folder from the untold number in the folder hierarchy. I backed up my entire mail folder from within > user > library & then moved the random folder back to where it started from.

I also deleted the "junk" folder from within the grey icon but I notice that today the junk folder is back & junk mail is being moved there instead of into the junk folder for my dot mac account that still resides in its original location in "Junk".

In fact, unlike iHope's situation, nothing has changed in my iCloud mail folder structure & nothing else has changed in my Mail folder structure either. I just have this unwanted/untidy but not particularly troublesome new icon.

Weird.

I've written to the ISP again. (They promote an image of themselves as being friendly and helpful... funny how reality always seems to get in the way?).

Any sign of Ernie Stamper?

I've put out a Batcall for him, no telling if/when he'll see it though.

I take it no luck so far in inviting him to have a look at the thread?

BDAqua,

On 24 April the ISP finally wrote back, and seemed to suggest a problem didn't exist! Here's the text:

I can confirm that unfortunately we are unable to recreate the behaviour you are describing. We have sent a brand new test message and a reply to an existing message in the inbox (to a co-reply paypal address so will not cause any problems). Both of these messages are in the Sent Objects folder which is the expected behaviour.

You should be able to just move any messages from Inbox.Sent and Sent objects.Sent folders into the correct parent Sent objects folder and delete these unwanted sub folders.

If we can be of any further help with regard to this or any other matter, please do not hesitate to contact us.

I replied on 26 April:

Thanks for your message, and the testing that you've done.

I'm a non-technical person trying to understand the issue. Your answers to the following questions would be very helpful.

1) Could you please confirm that my Webmail account currently has two 'Sent' sub folders as well as a 'Sent objects' folder?

2) Is there an explanation why Webmail created these two sub folders since the connectivity issue of 2nd April? (I didn't create them).

3) Before the connectivity issue of 2 April, sent emails were all in one folder, 'Sent objects'. Since then sent mail has not appeared in the 'Sent objects' folder. Is there a reason for this?

4) Before the connectivity issue of 2 April, Webmail (online) and the Mail application (on my computer) were mirroring each other, which I understood was the point of an IMAP account. This doesn't seem to be the case now. Can you advise what can be done to revert to the structure that existed before 2 April? For instance, could any changes to the Webmail preferences or configuration help in this respect?

5) You've written: "You should be able to just move any messages from Inbox.Sent and Sent objects.Sent folders into the correct parent Sent objects folder and delete these unwanted sub folders." Could you please explain how I can do this? Are you saying I can do this online in my Webmail account?

Do you have any thoughts on what the ISP has said?
