Weird, have you ever heard of Mail doing this before?

I'm using Mail version 2.1.3. I have 3 IMAP mail accounts. Mail shows 3 separate SENT mail boxes, and 3 separate INBOXES.

The 3 Sent mail boxes appear as sub-folders of SENT.

Today one of those sent sub-folders, let's call it 'iHope', vanished as a sub-folder of SENT and now appears down below on the left as '@iHope'. Mousing over this a tooltip says "Contains mailboxes stored remotely on imap (name of isp)".

Mousing over one of the other sent mail boxes (that's still a sub-folder of SENT) the tooltip says "Contents stored on server. Name on server: INBOX/Sent". That mailbox is on the same server as the iHope mailboxes

Any idea what's happened? Or what this means? And, of course, how can I revert Mail to it's previous situation?

Thanks,

iHope

In User > Library > Mail the problem is reflected in the way the 'IMAP-iHope' folder structure has changed.

Before the connectivity issue it looked like this, just 2 folders with sub-folders:

User uploaded file

Now 'IMAP-iHope' folder looks like this:

User uploaded file

Any idea what needs to be done to revert to the previous structure?

Are there any rules setup on the Server end?

Not that I know of.

You may recall, my message to the ISP, posted earlier today, included the following:

Can you advise what can be done to revert to the structure that existed before 2 April? For instance, could any changes to the Webmail preferences or configuration help in this respect?

I personally have no experince of changing anything at that end. Is it possible?

To sum up, I think this is the picture...

The key factor is that Webmail (online) began creating new Sent subfolders because Mail (on my computer) - due to a connectivity issue on 2 April - created "@iHope" (on panel on the left) and shifted the Sent mailbox there. But messages sent subsequently haven't appeared in the "@iHope" Sent mailbox, or in the Webmail Sent mailbox (where it's called 'Sent objects'). Hence the appearance of new sub folders for sent messages in Webmail.

In User > Library > Mail there is no mention of "@iHope", although the contents of "@iHope" are in the 'IMAP-iHope' folder .

[Mail presumably created "@iHope" when - because of the connectivity issue - it couldn't find the 'Sent objects' mailbox in Webmail. As an IMAP account, to mirror Webmail, Mail lost it's Sent mailbox. However, being smart - or realising something was wrong and not wishing to dump all the emails I've ever written - Mail created "@iHope" and saved the 'lost' Sent mailbox in it].

Unfortunately, when normal connectivity was restored Mail and Webmail did not revert to their previous structure . "@iHope" is still there. The Webmail folder structure make no sense. In order to avoid further problems I'm keen to find a solution asap.

Does the picture I've described seem right to you?

The @ folders at the bottom of the local Mail window exists for each of my IMAP accounts, but has separate entries for each in Inbox, Sent, Trash, & Junk.

There was no "@iHope" folder in the Mail left-hand panel before this problem started (ie before 2 April). I'm not sure what it is. Is it needed? I've been hoping it's possible to restore the structure that existed before... Will I be able to get rid of it?

Yes it was a POP account before. It was changed to IMAP a year ago.

I have another IMAP account with the same ISP. There has never been a 'globe@' folder for it in the Mail left-hand panel. It wasn't a POP account before.

I'm feeling less certain about what going on. I'd simply like all the sent emails to be in the same folder in Mail. Currently they're not. How can that be achieved?

And sent mail is currently in 3 folders in Webmail.

This is where we are after over 3 weeks. Not very impressive...

The ISP responded to my email of 26 April as follows:

I can confirm that I can see both "sent objects" and "sent".

You can click on the particular messages or click Ctrl and select multiple emails, then drag them into the appropriate folders.

You should also be able to delete the subfolder "Sent" by right clicking and deleting.

All of this can be done inside you webmail account.

The only thing I can advise with regards to the IMAP configuration is to double check all of the setting in the email client as we are unable to see what is on your end. We can only advise you on the webmail account.

I replied:

Thank you for responding to my first question and confirming the account currently has two 'Sent' sub folders as well as a 'Sent objects' folder. Thank you also for your advice regarding my 4th and 5th questions.

Before I attempt to make changes within Webmail and to my email client, it would be extremely helpful if you could respond to my 2nd and 3rd questions, namely:

2) Is there an explanation why Webmail created these ('Sent') two sub folders since the connectivity issue of 2nd April? (I didn't create them).

3) Before the connectivity issue of 2 April, sent emails were all in one folder, 'Sent objects'. Since then sent mail has not appeared in the 'Sent objects' folder. Is there a reason for this?

Your comments will hopefully help me understand what's happened, and how the issue might be resolved.
