Just wanted to say that this is the comment that helped me to resolve my issue. Both apple tv's, when turned on today only showed the computer and settings icons. I tried all other suggestions listed (reset, unplug, change location - although one apple tv would not even show the country list for locations - ) and after reset, the apple tv couldn't find my network. Somehow my network got wiped out (perhaps from resetting the router???) and luckily one of my computers found the unprotected basic network (default settings, no WEP, no name, no nothing). I had to reset up my network, and viola!!! the issue was resolved and I could find it and carry on happily... Thanks!!

I've tried everything mentioned in this thread and I cannot get the Apple TV past the Home Sharing and Settings icons.

I know the network is working because I can successfully sign in to iCloud on the Apple TV, but using the same credentials I cannot login to iTunes Store on the Apple TV. I can login to iTunes Store from the native iTunes Mac app. Also, the Location setting is empty and pretty much useless.

Do you think if I bring it to an Apple store can one of those geniuses figure it out?

Stumbled into this problem last night and subsequently across this page, and thought I'd share my resolution.

Short version: Make sure all your network cables are seated securely.

Long version: After trying all the solutions listed here (and elsewhere), I started looking deeper into solutions. As suggested here, I could connect to my phone's WiFi and all was right. I could also connect to my house's WiFi and all was right. But as soon as I tried using my house's wired network, the problem would again rear its head. I also noticed that when I was trying to run on the wired network, the ATV's IP address was not only not the one I had assigned to it, but outside the range I had set up in my router. Logging into my router, I noticed that the ATV was not showing up on its connected devices list. And neither was the TiVo, Blu-Ray player, Xbox or WIIU all connected to the same switch inside my A/V cabinet. "Aha!" I thought, "The switch is bad!" I went to my computer room and stole the switch from there (as I knew that it worked) and replaced the switch buried deep behind all the A/V equipment, rebooted the network and...nothing. All of the components still lacked network access, the router still wasn't seeing any of them and they all had "wrong" IP addresses listed in their "network settings" menus. Just to be sure that the old switch wasn't the culprit, I now put it in the computer room. Everything in there worked fine.

One thing I did notice though, was that the front light corresponding to network cable wasn't illuminated (I turned off the front lights on the old switch as it was distracting to have it lit up like a Vader's chest behind all the components in the cabinet). I looked over at the router on the other side of the room and noticed its corresponding light wasn't lit either. As I did, I remembered that I had dusted that area earlier in the day, and had a "Eureka!" moment. I walked over, pushed on all the cables plugged into the back of the router and voila, one *clicked*. As soon as it did, all was fine again. It was like that scene from Christmas Vacation where Ellen realizes that the lights were all wired to the same switch.

Thank you thank you thank you. I had given up. Yours was the only solution that worked. What a weird thing to have to do. It's been about 9 months since I last used the Apple TV. Oh my, do I have some catching up to do!! 🙂

Same problem. After years of fuss free operation when I turn on the ATV in the evening, I get these two icons, even though my ethernet cable is properly seated and the network works fine. I have to turn off the ATV, restart my router, and when it's ready turn on the ATV again. Then all is fine. It's ridiculous to have to do this every evening.

Will get my hands on another type of device, I think I just can't be bothered to jump through hoops for something that should simply work.

We had a power surge. It's on a power strip, it didn't hurt it, but when I got this message, all I needed to do was reset the ATV. It was a bit of a pain as I needed to log onto the wifi then into Netflix, etc, but it worked fine after that. Easy Peasy.😎

This started the other night for me. tried everything... unplug, restart, reset, logging in and out of all of my wifi router signals (we have two we use), auto, manual... it says connected to the wifi signals at the router when passwords are entered but then when i try to Test and log onto itunes, it fails. ( so i cant try the location>usa trick some people claim works).

All of our other devices in the house work on the wifi router and our signals.

Our IT guy at work gave me another ATV to try and it also did not work. Only computers and settings on home screen when trying to log in using the current home wifi signals.

I finally tried to use my iphone and created a personal hotspot. Logged in to it with auto settings, and it worked.

Then i logged out and back in to my local home wifi signals. I am back in business. My home screen is back to normal. phew.

I had the same problem. I just got off the phone with Apple. I had just replaced my old comcast modem with the new XFinity Modem. When I tried to go to the Apple TV it was acting strangely When I rebooted, I got the settings or computers thing. They had me:

1. Reset the Apple TV to original settings

2. Unplug my Time Capsule

3. Unplug my XFinity Modem

4. Wait about 2 minutes

5. Plug in the XFinity Modem (it takes FOREVER for the new XFinity modem to come up, so give it a couple of minutes)

6. Once it shows Online, plug in the Time Capsule

7. The Time Capsule shows a yellow light. Even direct connected computers still don't have an internet connection

8. After a few minutes the XFinity network connects and the direct connect computer works

9. Short time later, the Time Capsule light goes green and the wireless iMac is working

10. Go to the Apple TV and Click English and then select my WiFi network and type in the interminable password

11. Connection established and it looks normal'ish

12. Sign in in settings ->ITunes Store with my apple ID and password

An I'm on. Whew!

I just had the same issue. Racked the forums, tried everything (reset ATV, reset internet, unplugged ATV, factory reset ATV, etc..) and eventually found the solution--for me, at least.

Settings > iTunes Store > Location

Changed it to UK, then changed it back to US, logged back into my apple id. Everything's back to normal.

Thank you all for the information. The electrician came to my house, turned off the switch to the area where my modem and router are connected to fix a light and my ATV started to do the problem that everyone is talking about. I did what Aliksandyr said "Settings>iTunes Store>Location"

Changed it to another country, then changed it back to US, logged back into my apple id and everything is back to normal.

Thank you all for the info. and for posting. I was ready to take back the apple tv to the store for them to figure this out.

I have done everything everyone else has done since this thread started in the last week....twice ...finally went back and changed my country to one I did not even recognize and the normal screen came up. I do not think this is a valid solution but I am so weary with it, I was determined to keep trying. I am going to keep it that way for now anyway.

Same thing here. I just decided to see what happens when I switch it back to the US from whatever county I had it on, and it still works. Whew. I had to connect my apple TV to my cell phone as a hotspot and then login to my apple ID and finally change my country after the myriad of other things I tried to fix it.

This is ******** apple. As of yesterday november 1st my Apple TV stopped working. Notice how all the replies in this thread are from 2012 until suddenly several new posts after November 1st 2016. Whatever this crap is it needs to be addressed. Get off your *** apple!!

The changed iTunes (NOT Region) to Canada and back to US was a temporary fix (on a restart, back to no channels except computer and settings), and lost some channels (HBO)

I just did a full RESTORE. I had to sign back into iCloud and my WiFi.

But it's fixed!
