Download time

I just purchased an ipad3 to replace my defective nook color (touch screen problem on the 15 month old unit). I cannot understand why the download time of my magazine subcriptions from Barnes and Noble are taking 3-6x longer that to my nook color. Btw, I am based oversears. For example, I download issues of Readers Digest in 20-30 minutes, but with the ipad3 it takes 2 hours minimum. Car and Driver magazine from 30 minutes to nook...in ipad 3hours have past and only 70% done. If the file size of magazines for ipad3 bigger than that for nook color? The download time is getting to be irritating. And I thought that getting an ipad3 would be moving up in device performance.

Internet speed in my area is respectable. Browsing is normal for the ipad3.

Thanks.

It's very possible that B&N gives perference to their own devices....as in when a Nook connects it goes to the faster server than another device.

the only other determining factor could be the speed of your own internet, but if you're using the same connection for both devices, then it is likely something on B&Ns end.

It's possible that Nook editions are optimized and smaller (although it does seem like a lot of extra work to make 2 different versions, but stranger things have happened)

You can ask them if the connections and files are the same. If they are, then yeah, there might be something going on with your iPad's wifi.

I've never timed it but when I download People to read, which are 2-300 megs, it takes me 5-10 minutes or so.

I downloaded 3 magazines (Readers Digest, PopSci and Natgeo) from BN thru Nook app and was surprised that the usage in my Ipad3 shot up by 100mb. That is more or less 33mb per magazine. But the BN website says the natgeo issue is only 4mb. Does this explain why the downloads of mags via nook app takes 5-8x longer to Ipad3 than to nook?

I am planning to get my subscriptions from itunes. Their Natgeo file size is around 4mb. Does anybody know if after the download the usage will likewise increase by only 4mb? Or will I also end up loosing 30-35mb of memory like downloading via nook app.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can clarify me on this.

Where are you getting the 4MB file size from? I can tell you from first hand experience (I have half a dozen or more issues downloaded) that a single NatGeo issue from iTunes is in excess of 200MG. They are multimedia files containing text, very high resolution photos, and video.

I am so glad you asked this question Montenarra. I recently had my Nook Color stolen, along with my pc laptop and iPod touch! 😠😟 I have really been wondering if I should replace the NC or just upgrade to the IPad. I have wanted and Ipad for a long time and thought well, since I have to start from scratch I might as well get it. I did replace my pc with an Imac, well deserved. But it has been challenging getting the nook for mac app to work. I found a discussion that helped fix it and it works (mostly). I have dozens of magazines that I have never read in my account. I have been having problems getting to my old subscriptions on my IPhone. There are several magazines I cannot open on the phone. I also cannot get them to open on my mac. my fear is that i will purchase the IPad and still not be able to open the old subscriptions. Were you able to open, older magazines that were previously purchased on the nook, on your ipad 3?

Hi. In April this year I shifted from NC (touch screen failure only after 15 months of moderate use) to Ipad 3, Initially the download times of my magazines from my nook account was taking at least an hour. Some bloggers suspected that BN was probably cutting down the download speed since the download was not to their own device. Any after only a week or two, downloads of my mags, NG...Car and Driver, etc have gone down to 5 to 10 minute, good enough for my connection speed. To answer your question, I was able to successfully download to my Ipad 3 all my mag subscriptions that were previously stored in my NC. When I registered my new device with BN I suppose that their system automatically will erase all stored items in my old nook, though i never had the chance to check this out since my NC does not function anymore. Once the new device is registered with BN you will notice that all your subscriptions will appear in the "archived" section. All you have to do is download them one by one to your new device.

My understanding is that suppose that your NC is stolen, the user will initially enjoy all the contants bought from BN. What you do is archive all the books, mags, etc sourced from BN. The one using your NC will suddenly discover that all the contents sourced from BN will disappear. However, your personally installed music, videos, pdf will remain in the stolen NC. Hope this helps.

That was very helpful. I am understanding from your post that after you downloaded the old books and mags, and unarchived them, you were able to read them all? Have your download times improved? How is the responsiveness of the app? Thanks for the answers. I am really excited about the retina display with the magazines. Ill be sure to let you know when i finally get one. 🙂 I have to save all over because i spent the saved money on my IMac to replace my laptop that was stolen also.

I was able to easily store all my books and mags to my new device, new ipad. All those that was previously stored in my NC. Remember that this only works for all those sourced from BN, free or paid items in your BN account.

It was in April that my NC "died". It was a good thing that my son really convinced me to wait for the new ipad, due mainly to the retina display. I almost got an ipad2. 70% of my use is for reading books and mags, the rest for browsing and just checking emails. I do not use the ipad as a productivity tool, which for this purpose I use my desktop. No games for me.

I am very happy with the new ipad....the images are sooooo clear.. Really enjoying mags like Natgeo, car and driver..Worth the wait. The bigger size, than NC, is not an issue because I do not bring it around. Only for home leisure use.

Try out tunein radio free app. The $1 pro version has a recording button. Best app ever.
