Q: Way to back up iPhone contacts without iTunes/iCloud?

Hi, I have iPhone of the first generation and have recently bought a new 4S. How can I back up my old iPhone contacts to my PC and then transfer them to my new iPhone?

I obviously cannot use the iCloud with the old iPhone. I also do not want to sync the iPhone with iTunes in order to transfer the contacts to the PC since I am on a new laptop and the music on the iPhone will get deleted during sync with my new empty iTunes library. I am getting a similar message each time I want to transfer the contacts over to my computer via iTunes sync:

Thanks for your help.

    Hi ...

I also do not want to sync the iPhone with iTunes in order to transfer the contacts to the PC since I am on a new laptop

If you, "authorize" the new laptop, you can sync your Contacts without erasing the iPhone.

On the new laptop launch iTunes. From the menu bar top of your screen click Store > Authorize This Computer

Then follow the instructions here >   iOS: Syncing with iTunes

You need to get your contacts into a supported contact application on your computer. So, make sure whatever application you use has at least one unique entry. This entry can be fake, that doesn't matter, just make sure the contact application is not empty. Then: iTunes>Preferences>Devices...put a check in the box labeled "Prevent iPods/iPhones from syncing automatically". Connect your phone. Remove every check in every box for any & all iTunes content. Make sure the only thing checked is to sync contacts on the Info pane. Hit the apply/sync button. You'll get a popup asking to merge or replace, regarding your contacts, select merge.

If you follow Carolyn's advice, you will lose ALL of your iTunes content.

I would advise you to use some third party app in order to transfer the iPhone contacts to your PC. Have a look at this free application in order to transfer iPhone contacts to your PC without the need for iTunes.

Use the same tool to import the contact entries from your PC to your new iPhone.

Alternatively, you might want to start iTunes in Safe mode by clicking on CTRL+SHIFT keys while starting iTunes with your iPhone connected. Next, enter in device settings and tick "Manually manage music and videos"

Sorry hunkboost, iCloud does not support iPhone 3GS. Using third party apps to transfer iPhone contacts to PC as .csv and then to your new iPhone is the only option you have left. Check this tutorial for more help:

Undoubtedly Contacts are the most valuable part of our phones. It could be very difficult and time-consuming to re-build contacts of name, phone numbers and email addresses once you lose your iPhone or when the iPhone data get corrupted. So it is always a good idea to backup or copy iPhone contacts to computer.

Is the safe mode supports the latest version of iTunes? *** I get nothing different when press ctrl+shift to open it?

Apart from backuping iPhone data with iTunes and iCloud, another useful way is to back to your computer. I just extract iPhone data to computer for backup.
