Failure when upgrading to Aperture 3

I just bought a new MacBook Pro and I am installing Aperture 3 on it. I have already done this process on my iMac with no issues. I had no issues installing Aperture 2 and upgrading that version of the software, but when I try to upgrade to Aperture 3 I recieve an error. The error simply says the upgrade failed and to contact the manufacturer. I was wondering if maybe I put the serial number in wrong, but I do not think that is the case. I cannot get to the screen where I would put in the serial number, so I am assuming it was correct. I have had the software since it was first released, so I have no support from Apple, does anyone have any ideas what I can do?

I am running 10.7.3 on my macbook pro, I am still running 10.5.8 on my iMAC. Here are the steps that I have taken to this point.

I installed Aperture 2 on the mac book with no problems at all. Once I had it installed I checked up for updates and there was one available and I did the update. Once there were no more updates for Aperture 2, I inserted the disk for Aperture 3 and double clicked on the "install Aperture" icon and walked thru the steps, including entering the serial number from the software, it took the serial number with no issues and I accepted the terms and clicked continue, after the last step I recieved the failure message. It is an "the installation failed" pop-up. The pop up says the following " An unknown installation error occurred... The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance"

I appreciate any feedback I can recieve.

Try completely uninstalling Aperture 2 see Aperture 2: Troubleshooting Basics

about 2/3rds of the way down the page. In addition to those files look to see if there is a /Library/Application Support/ProApps/ folder and if there is if there is a file with Aperture in the name delete it.

Then go straight to the Aperture 3 DVD and install from there. You'll still need the earlier serial numbers from 2 in addition to the serial number from 3.

The idea here is that the upgrade DVD's contained the complete upgraded application, no code from the earlier versions was use. There were upgrades' only in the sense that they wanted the earlier serial numbers in addition to the current serial number. It's possible that something from the earlier app isn't playing nice with Lion.

Give that a shot and report back.

Wow you're quick!

So you uninstalled everything, was there a file in the /Library/Application Support/ProApps/ folder?

When you insert the Aperture 3 DVD and start the install it never even gets to the point where it asks for the serial number?

It's possible that the other files 2 left behind might be causing problems. There are the user pref files and the user Application Support files. You can try deleting those and see if it makes any difference. You could also do a re-install of Lion.

Other that that I have nothing else. Sorry.

One other thing, you could boot off the Lion recovery partition and do a disk & permission repair from Disk Utility.

Boot while holding down cmd-R. If you need further instructions search the Apple site for information on using the Lion recovery partition.

I have nothing concrete at this point. I still have a nagging thought that installing Aperture 2 prior to trying to install 3 on Lion might have left something behind that is causing this. But as I said I have nothing concrete to base that on.

You could try making a new admin account and log in on that account and try the install. If there was something in your environment causing the problem this would eliminate it.

You can look in the console logs when the Aperture install fails and see if anything is being reported. If so report it back here.

Finally there is doing an OS re-install. This will not affect your data just load in a new copy of the OS. Fairly easy dto do in Lion.

I'm having the exact same problem. Running Mac OS 10.7.3, tried uninstalling version 2 of Aperture and running the upgrade installer again. I was able to enter both serial numbers, but then the installation failed again.

Console logs reveal:

8/19/12 8:31:35.688 PM Installer: Failed install preflight: Error Domain=PKInstallErrorDomain Code=102 "The package “iLifeFaceRecognition.pkg” is untrusted." UserInfo=0x7ff6443c9e40 {NSLocalizedDescription=The package “iLifeFaceRecognition.pkg” is untrusted., NSURL=../Packages/iLifeFaceRecognition.pkg -- file://localhost/Volumes/Aperture/Aperture.mpkg/, PKInstallPackageIdentifier=com.apple.pkg.iLifeFaceRecognition, NSUnderlyingError=0x7ff6443d0980 "The operation couldn’t be completed. CSSMERR_TP_CERT_EXPIRED"}

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Looking at the error log the last line CSSMERR_TP_CERT_EXPIRED seems to indicate a problem some were having installing off an older DVD. Basically there is a developer certificate that is signed and dated that tells the OS the software being installed is OK. People had success bypassing this check by setting the system date back, installing the software and then resetting the date.

Try looking at Install failure for Aperture 3 on my MacBook Pro. Operating on Lion. and Attempting to install Aperture 3.1: installation fails These are two threads that discuss this.
