Updated to 10.6.1.7. Now error -42404. How do I fix it?

An update to my iTunes program was downloaded in the normal course. Now, when I connect my iPod, iTunes does not open. When I open iTunes, it does not recognize my iPod. iTunes is always displaying a message "A required iTunes component is not installed. Please repair or reinstall iTunes (-42404)."

An article at Apple Support entitled "Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP" set forth steps to remove & reinstall iTunes. It directed me to begin by uninstallng iTunes. I started the first steps by opening Control Panel, and then opening "Add or Rmove Programs." My computer then listed programs currently installed. To my surprise, iTunes was not listed as a "program currently installed." This was a surprise, because I am able to open iTunes, and some parts of it are functional (e.g., downloading podcasts), although the "-42404" error message keeps popping up.

If my computer will not let me uninstall iTunes (because it does not recognize it as "currently installed"), how do I proceed to fix the iTunes program defects?

Thank you for any help you can give.
