Annoying plus sign in table columns

I create a table on a pages layout document, and enter values (numbers) in columns.

A small + symbol within a small square appears in the right side of each cell, obscuring the right hand side of numbers or other data I have entered.

So far I have found no way to remove these symbols, and I do not understand the reason for their presence.

They seem to be some kind of 'invisible' and do not print, but I would still like to know how to remove them so that I can see each cell's contents clearly.

In case others come here (like I did) to find the answer to this question, there is another solution to the problem if you want to keep your row height and font size the same. You can go select the whole table, go the Text tab of the inspector, and at the bottom, reduce the inset margin to 0 or 1. This will make the text utilize the full width/height of the cell.

Jack,

The plus sign is the indicator that you have content that doesn't fit in the display area of the container. It's possible that you have a return character, or spaces or other items that you don't really care about beyond the displayed content, but Pages doesn't know that you don't want to include it, so it sends up that warning.

You can turn on the text Wrap, or you can try deleting excess characters, or you can shrink the content by changing the font size, and so forth.

Fonts include some built-in space in addition to the actual height of the characters. You can see the it in this example of lead type. Note the space below the descenders of the y, q and p characters, and above the t (slightly shorter than other characters with ascenders). Most characters with ascenders would reach very close to the top of the type block, like the ampersand, and other symbols in the lower row. Electronic 'type' includes this space as well, as an aid to readability.
