Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Persistent crashing, Lion.

Hi guys,

The last 6 months or so, I have had terrible problems with my computer hard crashing. It happens mainly when I am playing World of Warcraft (which is the only game I play on my Mac). The screen will freeze and turn completely pixelated with random graphic bleed, or just turn into a blur of lines and colour. The last sound that played will keep repeating on a 1 second loop and the only way I can use the computer again is if I hold the power button in for 4 seconds and reboot it that way.

This also seems to be possibly related to playing flash videos, youtube or whatever as it has crashed when I am playing them, but I also usually have WoW loaded at the same time.

The main problem I have with this crash is that it NEVER generates a panic report. However, today, for the first time it generated a report when I rebooted. I would be SO grateful if one of you experts could take a look at this log and perhaps tell me what is causing my Mac to lock up all the time?

Any thing more you need to know, please just ask.

This is my first post on the Apple forums after using Macs for 5 years untroubled, but this problem is really starting to get out of control. Any help at all will be greatfully received.

Many thanks,

hardtofin

You need to get rid of two SIMBL files for sure.

Follow the paths above, starting in the HD>Library folder.

When did you put Keeping Afloat on there?

Check this out: http://www.fountaincitycode.com/2011/03/how-to-uninstall-infinite-labs-keep.html

Hi again, Bee.

Firstly, I'd just like to say thanks so much for your help so far, it's fantastic and I'm really grateful.

I put keeping afloat on only about 2 weeks ago.

I went into my home drive library, app support and then SIMBL. All that was in there was a folder called plugins and inside that, just one file called keepingafloat.bundle. I have deleted that and also followed the instructions on the link you gave me to completely uninstall SIMBL which I have now also done. Ergo, I could not find net.culater.SIMBL.osax or net.infinite-labs.afloat. Was I looking in the wrong place?

Many thanks Bee and I look forward to your reply.

Hi there, you're making progress, I see.

🙂

Also, go here:

Double click your Hard Drive icon in the upper right hand corner.

See the Library folder there? That's your main Library. The Home Library is where you went for the Afloat one. Open the main Library, Look down to Scripting Additions. Open that for your SIMBL file. Trash it, but do tell me what what you found there, OK?

Apr 18, 2012 11:30 AM in response to TildeBee

Hi,

I have my HDD partitioned into 2 drives. One is "Macintosh" which has my OS on it. The other is called "Home" and has all my files there. In user accounts, I changed the "Home Directory" to /Volumes/Home when I installed the computer. This is because I like to have OsX on a separate drive so I can format from time to time without losing all my files or having to back them all up.

Initially when I did what you said above, I went into HOME>LIBRARY.

Now, in MACINTOSH>LIBRARY in SIMBL, there is nothing at all in there. However in scripting addons there is the following:

Adobe Unit Types.osax

MumbleOverlay.osax

Do you want me to delete these? What do you mean when you say "open that for your SIMBL file"?

Thanks

Hi guys,

Nearly two months later and I am still having crashes every day. I have now narrowed it down somewhat in that it has NOTHING to do with World of Warcraft. It has crashes many time on the desktop. I am not sure it might not be flash/java related.

It seems to happen a lot when I am streaming video from youtube or news websites. As stated previously, the screen has a graphics bleed all over it and then it simply locks up wit the sound in a constant loop. I have to hard reset to get out.

This means that it hardly ever generates a panic report, however, I have managed to retrieve 2 panic reports in the last few days which are posted below.

Is there ANYONE at all that can help me please? It's driving me mad!

Many thanks,

hardtofin

The simplest and most relevant way to isolate such issues is to create a new User and run the system from there, withouth activating any app at login. If you have the suspicion that named game is the issue, do not run it, run any app you wish. If the system is OK, then run what you think it may be the cause. If OK, than it is NOT the cause. Continue until you identify the issue. If no issue, you’ve got a corrupt system from a reason difficult to isolate.

Hi there.

Sorry for the late reply. I read your post the minute you posted it and have been tinkering ever since. I created a new profile and even with just basic things running it crashes. It doesn't even have to be in a game. Just running some java charts, or flash movie seems to crash it, although in all honesty, the lock ups feel pretty random.

Is there anyway of getting anything from those panic reports I posted? They are foreign to me.

Any help oyu can give is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

hardtofin

Then it is a serious issue. The cause may be a corrupt system or a hardware issue. The first instance may be easily checked by reinstalling the system, the best by erasing the disk (after a solid backup, of course). If, after installing a new and fresh system, the problem persists, you may have a serious hardware issue, and you must go to an Apple technician.

Jun 27, 2012 7:32 AM in response to Cattus Thraex

Hi Cattus,

I have done the hardware check, both short AND long versions (which took forever) and it came back saying my hardware was fine.

I am on lion at the moment but my computer came with snow leopard. I was wonderig whether to go back to that? Or maybe just reinstall Lion?

I am realyl fed up with it, as the lock up is random and so is realyl disruptive to my working day as I lose whatever I was doing and have to hard reboot.

Jun 27, 2012 7:38 AM in response to hardtofin

This is good news (but note that hardware check may be OK, but problems may persist).

Anyway, reinstalling a fresh system is what I would recommend, after a solid backup, never work with the system without backup. If not familiar with a backup app, just test the available ones, and choose the one you like. I recommend an new install by erase and install, which is a bit more complicated in Lion then before (just because many erased their disks by error).

Jun 27, 2012 7:52 AM in response to hardtofin

I am entirely satisfied with Lion, there were problem with 10.7.1–2, but solved in ...3, then in ..4. the problems reported seem related to the use of outdated, incompatible apps, otherwise all seems OK to me. But I admit some people may be more satisfied with SL, I do not know why. My son has a core duo 20 in iMac, which does not support Lion, but SL is simply fine. If yours is Lion compatible, I do not see why you would not go for it. You may install SL and, if all OK, upgrade to Lion, even if I am the adept of clean installations via erase and install method. But upgrades are OK as well.

Persistent crashing, Lion.
