Persistent crashing, Lion.

Hi guys,

The last 6 months or so, I have had terrible problems with my computer hard crashing. It happens mainly when I am playing World of Warcraft (which is the only game I play on my Mac). The screen will freeze and turn completely pixelated with random graphic bleed, or just turn into a blur of lines and colour. The last sound that played will keep repeating on a 1 second loop and the only way I can use the computer again is if I hold the power button in for 4 seconds and reboot it that way.

This also seems to be possibly related to playing flash videos, youtube or whatever as it has crashed when I am playing them, but I also usually have WoW loaded at the same time.

The main problem I have with this crash is that it NEVER generates a panic report. However, today, for the first time it generated a report when I rebooted. I would be SO grateful if one of you experts could take a look at this log and perhaps tell me what is causing my Mac to lock up all the time?

Any thing more you need to know, please just ask.

This is my first post on the Apple forums after using Macs for 5 years untroubled, but this problem is really starting to get out of control. Any help at all will be greatfully received.

Many thanks,

hardtofin

If, after an erase & install, you have any more Kernel Panics, please do take it in ASAP. These KPs are tremendously damaging to your hard drive. I am so sorry you are still struggling with this.

I just reread everything . . .

I'm concerned about your razer mouse (mice?).

Do you have an Apple mouse you can test with? Also, disconnect any peripherals to test, as well. KPs are often caused by connected peripherals -- or bad hardware. Please do check out the razer stuff, OK?

Hi there.

Did a full reinstall of lion. Have a few apps installed now, less than 10. Was ok for a few hours but then it locked up again. Hard lock up, no KP. However just now, it locked up again but this time it gave a KP so I have the report which I will post below.

FYI, I have NO razer mouse installed on this machine now, I am using the default apple one.

Here is the report. Please can you tell me if it says anything?

Many thanks for all your help and also thanks to Bee for checking this thread. I'm still having terrible problems.

I can take it to apple but my experience of their genius bar is far from genius. They are useless, do a few crappy tests and then just tell you te reinstall it.

Anyway, here is the report:

I am not good at reading panic reports but, if this occurs after a clean install, I suspect a hardware issue. It may be any hardware component, internal or external, perhaps someone could explain what it may be.

But I noticed there Little Snitch, and also ‘Have a few apps installed now, less than 10.’ Could you try to NOT install any, especially apps like Little Snitch, which dig into the system, such apps may often lead to crashes and panic reports. I repeat my suggestion: make a clean install via erase-and-install after a good backup, and DO NOT INSTALL any new non-Apple app and indeed no app like Little Snitch. If system behaves OK, as I guess, then isolate the rascal.

Jun 30, 2012 4:03 AM in response to Cattus Thraex

Thanks for the reply.

I have had the OS installe dfor 3 days and on the first day I had basically nothing installed on it, there was no crash. However this may have just been coincidence as it doesn't crash every day. By day 2 I had a few apps installed and this may or may not have caused the crashes.

The problem is, I use this computer all the time during the day for my work, so it is hard to test it for prolonged periods missing all the apps I need.

I am wondering whether to wait for mountain lion in a few weeks and do another clean install and try to run it with just apple products on it.

Many thanks,

hardtofin

Right. To finally finish this thread off, after over a month of testing; I isolated the problem. The answer........one I should have guessed immediately:

FLASH!!!

What else, buggiest piece of crap ever to hit a Mac.

I have now been running for over 3 weeks without flash and not had a single crash. The only time I experienced a crash in this time period was when I wanted to watch a Youtube video that used flash and so used chrome instead of safari, as chrome has a built in flash player that closes when I quit it.

Other than that, not a single crash. Thanks a lot to everyone for their help, and thanks for nothing Adobe.

hardtofin 🙂

Great new for me. It's started crashing again!! Oh joy 😟

Can anyone in the know cast any light on this for me please? Here is the crash report:

hardtofin 😟

Sep 22, 2012 12:04 PM in response to hardtofin

As always, there are two steps to isolate any similar issue:

- Create a new user.

- log out and log into the new user, and start using computer there.

Do not activate any 3rd party application in the new user, none which may start up at log in. Before this, delete or deactivate any apps interfering with the system, e.g. Little Snitch or the like.

If all is OK after 2-3 days of normal work, I suspect you have apps incompatible with your system. If you go back to the user you are logged in now, the issue may be again manifest.

Creating a new user, and non activating any app starting up at log-in, is the best test for outdated apps, which interefere with the system.

Those aren't crashes. They're Kernel Panics. They are usually caused by hardware faults, and sometimes software.

For Lion and ML, you need LS 3.0. First update it. If you crash then, get Little Snitch off there and test, or take it in.

Every time you have a KP, it has the possibility of damaging your hard drive. You were advised to take that off before. Please!

I'm running Flash with absolutely no problems, so get the newest version on there. If those two thing do not stop these KPs, take it to the Apple Store, ASAP. Seriously. I would vote for a bad graphics/video card probably.

But don't keep running it like this.

Persistent crashing, Lion.
