well i have been having this issues with some of the users getting this read only problem.

So here it goes, microsoft needs to improve there coding!!

in my case and i say this it might not work for all of you, (well i hope it does) the users always were using the slash ie, myfile_from_20/09/2012.xlsx.

the solution that worked for me was to remove the slash and put a dash. now when they open it, it is no longer read only.

Same thing here. Excel 97-2004 .xls seem to allow / in the file name but 2011 .xlsx does not. Saving with - between the dates solved it for me too. Thanks everybody for the needed help and learning something new.

Ditto on Excel Offfice for Mac 2011 converting .xlsx to read only when using "/" in filename. Taking / out of file name corrected problem.

Another confirmation that elminating the "/" solves this issue.... odd isn't it.

I have also had this problem, and removing the "/" in the file name has solved the problem. Using Excel 2011. Cheers, Jason

I was having the same problem and changing the / to a - worked perfectly! Thank you!

I don't have / in my file name, and it still happened. The file is not locked, and I read/write privileges for the file and the folder.

This Read Only issue occurs periodically for me. When it occurs, I am able to save the file under a new name in the same folder. I just can't use the original file name. This is really problematic for me.

Any other suggestions?

I have the same problem; not using anything else but letters and numbers, and sometimes it goes okay for weeks, sometimes all files are locked read only....

I am having the same problems, but do not have any special characters in the filename. Saving as an xls file instead of xlsx did not solve the problem. I now have the file under four names. Any other suggestions?

I infrequently have the same issue with files with no special symbols being read-only upon reopening. I tried all the above relevant suggestions to no avail. Then I clsed the file, restarted Excel (mine is Excel:mac 2008 ver 12.3.6), reopened the file and problem solved.
