App updates interrupted, will not resume

If I lose my wifi signal in the middle of downloading updates, I seem to never be able to resume them nor cancel them. If I try to resume them I get "unable to download application" ad nauseam, no matter how many times I hit "retry".
I can't cancel the updates either, and this leaves the apps unusable as they remain paused on update mode.

I've tried logging out of the App Store and back in, nothing. I've made sure all my account info is properly updated, nothing.

I'm not interested in any fixes involving iTunes on my computer because I know how to do that. I want to know how this is fixed ON THE IPOD TOUCH ITSELF, and if it can't be, why Apple isn't doing anything about it. I shouldn't need to have to plug the iPod into my computer to un-bungle it because I don't always have access to my laptop.

iPod touch, iOS 5.1

I had the same problem on my iPad. I couldn't find any solution, but at last I tapped one of the apps (that stopped updating) on the normal screen. (By the way, it was greyed out on the screen) It started downloading, installing, not longer greyed out and it worked again. I did this for all the apps that were stuck in the update screen of the app store and it worked out for all the apps.

So stop the "App Store" app, go to the grayed out app and tap it. It will start downloading and installing.
