Weird problem with iMac

When I click on a certain link on 2 different web sites I get logged out. Other links on both sites work OK

One is the JvZoo site, and when I click the link to access a product download, it logs me out every time.

Other is aWeber site, and when I click link to create a new form, it logs me out.

Clicking other links on both sites, works OK and I stay logged in.

I can access both sites using my old Windows PC, and everything works OK

I have tried different browsers, cleared cache and cookies, tried using direct connection to my cable modem, and also using wireless connection from cable modem and router.

Any ideas why this is happening. I have contacted both sites support, and both say sites should work OK on iMac.

Thanks, Lewis

I contacted Apple support, and after a lot of troubleshooting, they had me boot into the recovery disk to see if I would experience the problem there.

I did that, logged in to one of the problem sites, and it worked perfectly.

They advised me that there was evidently a corrupt file problem in my Lion install, and that a re-install should solve the problem.

As soon as I get that done, I'll come back and post the results, hopefully a positive report.

Thanks to all for the help.

John Galt, you were absolutely right in saying that it was headed toward a Lion re-install.

I'm back to square one. Did a new install of Lion and still have the same problem, so evidently the problem is not in the OS but in an application or something that is running and causing my problems.

I can boot into the recovery hard drive and open Safari and access the 2 web sites with no problems. I am assuming that the recovery HD only has basic apps installed, whereas my regular desktop has basic plus all that I have added since I got the computer. I'm guessing now that one of those has a conflict that is causing my problem.

Back to the drawing board.....

Could be. I would make absolutely certain of your proxy settings again, and I would "remove all website data" again, both accessed through the following Safari Preferences:

User uploaded file

"Change Settings..." takes you to Network Preferences > Proxies which you did already.

In the next panel select "Remove all website data":

User uploaded file

Could be a problem with your router, though I think that's doubtful since it works with your PC.

In proxies, none of the boxes were checked. I tried checking the option for "Auto Proxy Discovery".

I did the "Remove all Website Data".

Still have the same problem, logs me out same as before.

I have eliminated router and modem by turning both off, activating wireless, and connecting to a wireless network in a building across the street. Still have the same problem.

In cases like this sometimes it's useful to summarize what you've done. So far we know the following. The problem exists:

  • with a different account
  • with all site security certificates deleted (there were none)
  • with no proxies
  • with no Safari cookies and emptied cache
  • with all browsers
  • with any network connection available to you
  • with a new Lion installation
  • with a new Safari installation

it does not exist on a different Mac or while no other apps are running on yours.

You observed earlier:

I am assuming that the recovery HD only has basic apps installed, whereas my regular desktop has basic plus all that I have added since I got the computer. I'm guessing now that one of those has a conflict that is causing my problem.

I agree, the solution is in determining what those apps are.

Try this: In Terminal, copy (triple-click) and paste the following line:

osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item'

This will produce a list of all your account login items.

While you are in Terminal, copy (triple-click) and paste the following line:

kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'

This will produce a list of all non-Apple kernel extensions. There will be few, if any.

Post the results of the above.

After talking with Apple support again, they want me to do a total disk erase and install OS again and then use time machine backup to restore my files. I am making another backup now so that I have 2 complete backups in case one fails for some reason.

I did what you suggested, and results are below. If problem could be solved without doing a complete new install, it would be much easier.

Here are results.....

Thanks. Start by removing Intego Virus Barrier from your Login Items in System Preferences > Users & Groups. Select it and remove it with the "–" (minus) key. Log out and log in again to see if that makes a difference.

If not, methodically get rid of anything and everything with the name Intego or VirusBarrier X6. Use its uninstaller if one is available, and then run the commands again to verify it's really gone.

I do not know if Intego is responsible for this problem but it has been implicated in a number of others.
