Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

AVI videos from iTunes don't sync/play on iPad, but via Camera Connection Kit - YES

I synced about 100 events (containing both photos as well as .avi "video" files) from my MacBook Pro-13" (10.6.8) to my new iPad 3. NONE of the avi files transferred, but then I kinda expected this as I understand iPad can only play m4e or MP4 video formats.

BUT then I transferred an avi file from an SD card using the Camera Connection Kit - and the video played just fine! I'm going to redo this -- the 58 second video appears in the videos section of my iPad under "movies".

Can anyone explain why this worked via the Camera Connection Kit but not via iTunes - and indeed why the avi file plays at all on the iPad?

Thanks.

Best regards,

Steve Schulte

Oplayer needs video imported via the apps tab, then scroll down to File Sharing,

you would find Oplayer there, and can drag and drop files in.

Not ideal for home movies.

Or possibly it could work for you.

I believe you could just drag the video from iPhoto to the File sharing pane of Oplayer.

As you use iPhoto, have you ticked the include video button?

I am sure I got avis sent to my photos app via iTunes.

There is an iPhone and an iPad version of Oplayer:

Kiwiphone4 -- NO LUCK importing avi "Nikon Coolpix" taken movies via iTunes using the photos tab-- with import videos it just ignores them. (It does give a warning on .MOV videos that it cannot import them -- no warning at all on AVI videos - it just ignores them).

So I don't see how I can use OPlayer to import avi via iTunes if iTunes doesn't actually "have" the .avi video…

Appreciate any additional comments--

"Also: If I now have, for example, 20 "Nikon-taken .avi movies" in iPhoto in my "Summer vacation event" and I want to move them directly to my iPad 3 running iOS 5.1.1 with OPlayer installed: Can I do that? It seems I have to go via iTunes - but I won't find those avi movies in iTunes, will I? (Just in iPhoto)."

Use iTunes File Sharing (accessible in the Apps tab) to directly transfer the videos to OPlayer (or any other, third-party player).

Sorry, I was certain that photos tab worked.

What a pain that it does not!

Here is how file Sharing looks:

User uploaded file

So the video files actually are not stored in iTunes at all.

It is just the conduit between Oplayer and the files.

Oplayer app will store the videos in it's own area, and you can open them in it.

Try the free version first to see how it works!:

You can only import AVI files via the CCK from a physical memory card or camera, NOT via iTunes.

Click the Apps tab, the File Sharing interface is there.

Most everyone may have missed the basic problem: The ipad can play (some) videos transfered in via the Camera Connection Kit. When those same videos are first transfered to the computer, they can NOT be transfered back to the iPad via iTunes without converting them, even if iTunes itself can play them.

It is illogical. That is why I think feedback to Apple would help, if enough people complained.

If you want to play avi files via iTunes, you can try converting your .avi files to Apple format. you can do this with AVI to iTunes Video Converter for Mac (file>export) . then you can move all your files to itunes for new ipad or iphone. For iTunes or QT, you should select an iTunes-friendly output format, such as MOV, MP4 or M4V

Please don't promote commercial products when there're vastly superior(!) free(!) ones like HandBrake.

Well, I've benchmarked the app you recommended (running under 10.6.8 on my 2.8 GHz C2D late 2009 17" MBP). It took 8:43 to convert the Big Buck Bunny MSMPEG4 AVI (original: http://mirrorblender.top-ix.org/peach/bigbuckbunny_movies/big_buck_bunny_1080p_s tereo.avi ) to 960*640 3Mbps (default). The latest Handbrake took just a little more than half of this time (5:11) under exactly the same circumstances with exactly the same resizing (to half Full HD).

So much for Handbrake being "slow". As you can see, the free Handbrake is clearly faster than most commercial, expensive converters.

Hurray! Apple must have listened. Using iOS 6, I can now transfer .MOV files to my iPad 2 via iTunes 10.7, and they play.

I tried to watch a streaming video at a website and the iPad downloaded the .FLV file into memory. Safari now has the "Open In" option, so I chose GoodReader. Of course it would not play there, but I was able to transfer it to my computer using iTunes.

Selecting the iPad in iTunes, and clicking on Apps at the top of the window, I scrolled down to the File Sharing window, clicked on GoodReader and found the downloaded .FLV file. I dragged it to the desktop and was able to play it in QuickTime Player. Then I chose Export under the QuickTime Player File menu, l selected the iPod touch & iPhone 3GS Format, and the .FLV was exported as an .MOV file.

Dragging the .MOV file to the iTunes Movies window, I was able to sync the .MOV file to the iPad and play it there.

This is a round-about way to play .FLV files, but it represents progress!
