Software will not update on 10.6.8

Some other info that may be relivant?

I can not start in safe mode. I have tried several times with no luck. I have unplugged the power to reset the CPU. Still won't start in safe mode.

Chrome wont update either.

When I click on about chrome I get update failed Error 12.

If I open Safari & download chrome again & install>replace I get the latest version installed.

Is it possible to update my software in a similar fashion?

By trashing my Apps one by one & installing them again from the App Store?

Is it possible to link my iMac to my MacBook (which has no update issues & is running the same programme etc) & update that way?

Just a thought?

Or is it time to take my iMac in for repairs?

If there's a place you can take your iMac to for repairs (e.g., an Apple Store), that might be the last step. But I bet the first thing they'll tell you or try is to reinstall the OS. Since Snow Leopard was the last of the media-based installers, do you have the DVD's that came with the iMac or the Snow Leopard upgrade disks, if it came with something earlier?

I've held off suggesting something that drastic because that's what Apple told my wife when she ran into trouble with her then new MacBook Pro and something entirely different was causing the problem, which reinstalling the OS didn't fix.

I do have the discs but the OS install DVD is version 10.6.2 Disc version 1.0

I had a new hard drive fitted after a melt down December 2011 & when I got it back it was running 10.6.8

The Apple shop that installed the new hard drive didn't give me an updated disc & I have been reluctant to use the old disc fearing it may create more problems than it would solve?

Do you have an external USB or Firewire drive you can boot from if you install the OS on it? If so, you could boot from the DVD and then use it to install the OS the external. Then boot from the external and see if you can get all the updates from Software Update. Booting off a USB external will be slow because you don't have USB 3.0 connection; Firewire would be faster. But either way, you can establish if the problem is associated with your internal drive.

I've read you could also set up another account on the internal and log into it to see if there's something associated with your current login account that's causing the problem (maybe some software that was installed along the way which is now causing trouble), but I've never actually tried that so can't speak from first hand experience.

Excellent. If your Mac had the latest Full retail disc, it would be 10.6.3.

You can install that 10.6.2. Don't open your email, just use Software Update and update to 10.6.8, Installer Updater, and Security Updates, and all the rest. Don't stop updating until you are completely up-to-date.

I inserted the install DVD. Double clicked it>Install Mac OS X.app & got a message saying OS X Snow Lepard can not be installed on this computer.

Did you boot from the install DVD? If not, with the DVD in the DVD drive, reboot and hold down the "C" key after the chime. The Mac should boot from the DVD though it may take a bit longer.

I am having the exact same issue. I have 10 software updates to install. After the Software Update "checks for new software", I receive a message telling me; in order to install the updates I must restart my computer. I restart, and nothing installs. I have started up in "Safe Mode", repeated the power cycle, removed unused apps via programs such as CleanMyMac. I've tried the NVRAM reset, repairing permissions and running the verify disk check muptiple times, I am just short of throwing it out the window! If anyone has any other suggestions, your help would be greatly appreciated! I have been incurring issues with my Yahoo email and the ability to attach attachments, I believe because I am unable to run a few of the updates. The only recent change/download I have made was a HP software driver update. Other then that, I can't imagine what suddenly caused this issue. HELP! 🙂
