Keep getting problems using transitions with backgrounds

You have the right side of the edit point selected? When you click on it, is it yellow? When you click on the left side, is that also yellow? Maybe double click the edit point and post a screen shot of the precision editor that will open up.

Yeah, the edit points are yellow and below are screenshots with the precision editor open so you can see what the ends look like (for some reason I needed to do it twice to show each end of the clip).

The same actions (cmd-T, dragging a transition, etc) all result in the same prompt telling me that I don't have enough media. The weirdest part of this is that when I get the prompt that asks "Do you want to overlap (ripple trim) your media to create the transition?" and I select "Create Transition," nothing happens. It's as if the prompt never appeared in the first place. This feels like a bug in Final Cut...

There's something wrong. You should not be getting this error message.

This was exactly the problem I was having. I never got resolution. Hopefully this new poster does and will share!

I'm having the exact same problem. Just updated to 10.0.8 this morning. Anything else, black holes, lights and objects can be added from the transitions tab but not cross dissolve or fade to color. Argh...

You realize this thread is exsctly a year old, and the problem of the original poster was solved, even if it wasn't marked solved, and the OP was clearly using a different version of the application.

I found a workaround for the problem:First you need to add some light effect from the transitions tab, by dragging as you would normally do, and after that you will be able to replace the light effect with a normal x dissolve:P

Just becasue this thread is a year old does not mean all of us who keep having the same problem don't keep having it. Would you rather 11 different threads? Is that what apple would need to repair the bug?

That works! if you use the "light bloom" effect, it will apply as expected.

This is a bug. We need to get apple to repair it.

now we all have the solution - and so will everyone who googles for that error message just like I did.

This is how threads get to be 30 pages long going back a couple of years and nobody can find anything on it because ever transition problem, for instance, ends up in one thread. But whatever.

I too get the "there is not enough extra media beyond clip edges to create the transition" message no matter what I try, even though I know there is enough...

The bloom trick works for me, which in my mind confirms this is a bug. But its a PITA because its a duplicate step you have to perform for every transition... Definitely a bug... But I wonder what is causing this, obviously everyone doesn't have this problem or there would be a million people raising ****. I wonder what the common denominator is for us with this problem???

FCPX 10.0.8

MacPro early 2009

OS X 10.8.4

1. go to PREFERENCES - EDITING

2. there is - Transitions:... make shure that DURATION is 1,00 seconds or more!!!!))))))

if it less than 1 sec - an error will occur
