Keep getting problems using transitions with backgrounds

Sometimes its fine, but many times I get the error:

There is not enough extra media beyond clip edges to create the transition.

Do you want to overlap (ripple trim) your media to create the transition?

This will decrease the total duration of your project.

I can hit Cancel or 'Create Transition' button and then nothing happens - no transition (cross dissolve) is added.

If I step back til before I add the background the transition is added to footage just fine.

User error or some known bug?

What error messages? Can you post a screen shot of your transition preferences? You can't set a transition preference of seven frames. Transitions are based on decimal percentages of time. 1.0 is one second. 2.0 is two seconds. 0.5 is half a second. 0.25 is a quarter of a second. Half a second means 12 frames in a 24fps project, 15 frames in a 29.97fps project, and 30 frames in a 59.94fps project. By setting it in decimals it means you don't have to change your transition preference every time you switch between projects with different frame rates.

The post I made here today has been removed on the basis of so-called "advertising."

I have a problem with adding transitions to clips in my timeline. Final Cut Pro X is not working properly. In looking for a solution, I made a video that visually describes my problem and frustration with this particular Apple product. There is no advertising. There was a link to a video illustrating my problem. Please help me find a solution Apple and the Apple Community.

Apple is not the company it use to be. This statement alone may have me banned from ASC for life if they find this against policy as well. Wow.

I saw the video you posted.

It is quite possible that you are experiencing the effects of a bug, but it certainly is not one that is widespread.

Every time I have seen people complain about the dialog box "There is not enough media...", well, there simply wasn't.

I may of course be wrong, but you do not seem to understand what *handles* are.

You say there is enough media. But that is not the point. If you have a one-minute long clip and select the laste five seconds and drag to the timeline, you have 55 seconds *before* but zero seconds *after*. That means a transition before the clip is ok, but not after.

Also: try double-clicking on the edit point to actually see how much handles you got. This is what is called the "precision editor". The outgoing clip is above, the ingoing is below. You can see that I have a lot of extra media before the edit point in the incoming clip (a big "handle"), but relatively little after the edit point for the outgoing clip. The size of this smaller handle will be the limiting factor when it comes to the duration of the transition.

I appreciate your reply. Really.

I do understand the term handles and have more than enough space on both sides of each and every clip. It just seems to be a hit or miss situation. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Hardware is plenty powerful enough. I'll close the software, reopen and same issue rears it's head that wasn't there prior.
