Does Apple provide replacement batteries for out of warranty early 2008 Macbooks? Just wondering as my old MacBook is giving a "replace soon" or similar message under the battery status also would it be worth the cost to replace it considering its age?

If you have a MacBook with the removable battery you can get a new third party battery fairly cheap on eBay.

Apple will sell you a replacement battery. Batteries are considered consumables (that means that they wear out) and a 4 year old battery would definitely not be replaced for free.
The Apple store online shows the price as being $129. Other users have reported being able to purchase 3rd party batteries for significantly less on eBay.
