Time Capsule Factory Reset

I want to perform a factory reset on time capsule (TC). Will reset button on back of unit complete this task? If yes will this also wipe all data on the capsule? This TC was setup by someone else and I want to start from scratch, but using a hard wired connection and using Verizon router for the wireless connections.

Thank you.

I want to perform a factory reset on time capsule (TC).

This Apple Support document will tell you how to do this:

Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ

Will reset button on back of unit complete this task?

Yes, or you can reset using AirPort Utility. See the support document above for details.

...will this also wipe all data on the capsule?

Any data that is on the Time Capsule hard drive will not be touched. If you want to erase the hard drive, that is a separate operation. Post back for details if you want to do this.

So your saying I must wipe data first and then perform the factory reset? If yes how do I wipe data from the drive?

If you can access the settings for the Time Capsule using AirPort Utility now, you can do the reset first, or you can erase the drive first. It does not matter.

If you cannot access the settings using AirPort Utility, then you will need to perform the Factory Default Reset first, then erase the Time Capsule drive.

To erase the drive....

Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup

Click the Disks icon at the top of the window

Click the Disks tab

Click Erase

The "Quick Erase" option will only take a minute or two

Time Machine over write data when it fills up capacity of the drive?

When the drive is full, Time Machine will automatically start to delete the oldest backups first, to make room for new backups.

After TC is reset and I reinstall TC will TC find all the network connected drives automatically?

Not sure what you mean by network drives here. Time Machine will backup a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion. It will also backup a USB or FireWire drive that is connected to a Mac as well....as long as the drive has been formatted for Mac in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Will give me a list in which I can select which devices to backup?

You would setup backups from each Mac. The Mac will "see" the Time Capsule drive as an eligible backup destination using Time Machine.

Sorry for the confusion. What I meant to say was that I am connecting the TC to a workgroup network switch and wanted to know if I can access the TC through Airport utility to see and configure all the computers on the network OR must I manually access each computer to configure it to backup on the TC?

Thank you.

As I said previously.....You would setup (Time Machine) backups from each Mac. The Mac will "see" the Time Capsule drive as an eligible backup destination using Time Machine.

On each Mac.....

Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)

Open Time Machine

Turn it "ON"

Click Select Disk

Click the Time Capsule to highlight it

Click Use for Backups

Time Machine will automatically keep separate backup files for each Mac that is backing up to the Time Capsule.
