24inch intel core 2 duo iMac early 2008 memory upgrade

I try to upgrade my iMac early 2008 with existing 2GB memory and new 4GB memory (Komputerbay 4GB DDR2 800MHz PC2-6300 PC2-6400 DDR2 800 (200 PIN) SODIMM Laptop Memory) but it doesn't work. When I insert this new memory, there is 3 error beeps. Is this memory compatible with iMac or is there something wrong with this memory?

Thank you,

imac, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

This is the kind of RAM your machine takes - PC2-6400 DDR2

Do not mess around with RAM. It is the quickest way to turn your machine into a large black box.

I've always upgraded with Crucial RAM and have never had any issues.

Here is a link to a guaranteed RAM upgrade for your iMac - 2 x 2GB sticks $61.99 - A small price to pay for confidence.

You only get what you pay for. I had a quick net scan for reviews of Komputerbay RAM and it wasn't very favorable.

No problem, just had to check. I read about Komputerbay RAM on the net and one person said they had three out four sticks fail. Cheap RAM is exactly that, cheap! I just put 8GB of Crucial RAM in my 2009 24" iMac without a hitch what-so-ever.

These are the specs for your machine. you should bookmark it for future use:

The specs state you can out 6GB in your machine, but Crucial won't guarantee it. However, if you do decide to go for 6GB have a look at OWC (Other World Computing) they sell 6GB packs as an upgrade for you model.

I know it's an old post but just wanted to drop a line and say that I've been seeing a very stable iMac operation since I upgraded my machine to 8GB of RAM. It's an early 2008 (not 2009) iMac, which pretty much everywhere seems to be cleared for working with up to 6GB. I am really not sure why it works with 8GB and how come that it doesn't crash.
