Images transferred to iPad New (3) are smaller than original images

I have a few hundred 10 megapixel JPG images that take up 4.7 gigs on disk.

When I move them all to the iPad 3 they take up only 2.6 gigs on the iPad.

If i move the same images to the iPad 1 they take up only 1.1 gigs on the iPad.

It looks like the iPad 3 is doing some sort of image compression on the images thus reducing quality.

While it is doing much less of this then the iPad 1 it is still doing quite a bit of it.

Anyone have any way to avoid this or have any comments about it?

Photos are "optimized" for viewing when you sync them from iTunes to your devices, there's no way around that.

Due to the retina display on the new iPad, the size of the photos is bigger, the pixel resolution of the original iPad screen does not need that much info, that's why the size of the photos is reduced as well.

Because you can pinch and zoom around an image on both devices with ease. All the detail could be used on both device. While I can understand the optmized concept would be fine for many and should be the default. This is an issue for photo professionals.

Having such an amazing screen on the iPad 3 and then not allowing people to take full advantage of it as a way to view high quality photos without reducing the quality (optimizing) is a shame.

Again as you can pinch and zoom you could see all the pixels if you zoom in on any ipad. On an iPad 1 you would have to zoom in more because the native display is a lower resolution.

On any PC/Mac with any resolution monitor you always have the choice to zoom in and see your image at 1:1. Also in the iPad 3 i noticed it is not lowering the resolution of the images. They are still 10 megapixel images they are just doing more JPG compression then I would like.
