I checked the latest update, and now fcpx will import from my sony a65 in 60p, edit it, and then export it as 59.94. If I remember to change the preferences back to optimized rather than proxy, the exported file looks great.
My intel core2duo really needs to edit in proxy, as it stutters a lot.

Better performance is only a playback option and doesn't affect output at all. The application reduces image quality to, especially if unrendered media, to facilitate realtime playback.
And one can remove the optimized files later from the disk and if need be reoptimize them, is that the case?
You could do that if you had to.
Thanks, Tom. That would ease the load on my external drive. I'd always have a copy of the imported original files and a backup of this anyway (on my thunderbolt raid). And an extra copy of the original files straight from the camera. Keeping the optimized files would stuff my drive in no time.
