After I updated to Adobe Acrobat Reader, Build: 10.1.3.23

the following changes occured in Safari: the Preview toolbar at the bottom-center of the page has been replaced by a similar looking Acrobat Reader toolbar.

Nastily in Acrobat Reader preferences / Internet / Display PDF in browser using: Applications/Adobe Reader.app is greyed out! I can't untick it.

Responsible might be this installed Plug-in (in Safari)?: Adobe Acrobat NPAPI Plug-in, Version 10.1.3

How can I uninstall Safari Plug-Ins?

How can I get back to viewing PDFs in Safari with Preview? (In Finder pdf documents are still set to be opened with Preview.)

Thank you.

Hi...

Possibly, yes.

Go to /Library/Internet Plug-Ins

If you see the Adobe PDF browser plugin in the Internet Plug-Ins folder, move it to the Trash.

Quit then relaunch Safari ...

My problem viewing pdf's in Safari was that all pdf's were black screens. The pdfs wouldn't open. All this after updating Adobe Reader to 10.1.3.

Deleting the two plugins described above restored viewing pdf's in Safari.

The link in Carolyn Samit's submission above outlines removing the two plugins and reinstalling Acrobat Reader.

After following this advice pdf's were no longer viewable in Safari.

My question now is, Is it advisable to not reinstall Acrobat Reader which puts the two plugins back into the Library folder, or not reinstall Reader and leave the two plugins out? What are consequences of not reinstalling?

I could not save downloaded .pdf files, let alone change their name, in Safari 5.1.5 (OS 10.7.3; Adobe Reader 10.1.3). But I could do this with other browsers such as Firefox. After moving the two plugins to the "Disabled Plug-Ins" folder in Library/Internet Plug-ins and relaunching Safari, everything came back to normal. I view .pdf files with Preview, but can also read them with the Adober reader.

I did not go that far, but moved the two plug-ins back from disabled to the original position. Immediately Safari baulked at pdfs. So back they went to disabled and Safari is behaving again. If something does not work without the plug-ins, I will try reinstalling the Adobe Reader, as you suggest. In the meantime, my problem looks solved.

Here's my problem, running 10.7.3 and Safari.

I installed the 10.1.3 and have been running in 64 mode. If when viewing a PDF I choose File>Save As... I get a dialog saying "Export as... and upon trying to do so I get an error message that it can't export.

If, however, I choose the little floppy icon in the popup at the bottom I get a "Save a copy as..." and everything works as expected.

If I delete the Adobe plugins as specified in earlier posts, I get the Preview view of PDFs in Safari and Save As works normally.

I tend to like Adobe's viewer because it defaults to a bigger view, otherwise it's apples/oranges, er adobes.

I have the same problem--I installed a new Acrobat and it became the default reader for Safari. But when I go to the Internet plug-in folder, it is *empty*--not a single plug-in is listed. When I list all the plug-ins (by going to the help menu / Installed plug-ins in Safari), there's plenty of plugins installed. I should add I don't have the slightest idea how to use Terminal (and I am deeply annoyed that Apple is increasingly making it impossible to do fixes without using Terminal)

Thanks!

Have you tried to locate the files with the general search function of the Finder? Look for names containing AdobePDFViewer. There should be two and those are the ones you want to remove.

As for Terminal, we may both belong to a minority who are uncomfortable using it. But having tried it a few times, with precise instructions as to what to do, I must admit one survives and learns ...

This was very uncool of Adobe - it installed itself automatically with an update.

In case anyone from Adobe is reading, I've tossed Acrobat reader as a result. Please do not hijack other software!

However, it would also be nice if Safari had a place to manage its plugins within its own preferences. I thought it did – it has "extensions", are they not plugins? –, but this one wasn't visible there.

Many thanks to Carolyn for the solution.😍
