So Thrilled for you quick, simple, painless way to get rid of this nasty Malware.

If you are interested, I accidentally installed it while downloading CyberDuck, an FTP application I trust and use a lot. The malware was part of the "Accept" options and I accidentally trusted the download not to dump malware on my Mac.

If you have never encountered MacKeeper, it's a persistent app that offers to help clean up your Mac, weather you needed it or not. The app keeps firing off a Helper to make sure it's always running.

The problem is, this app significantly slows down your mac os and it's nearly impossible to get rid of, easily!.
The last time I had to remove it from a Mac, it was embedded deep and deceptively named in multiple place in my Preferences, which was very hard to root out. it just keeps coming up and won't un-install.

Today, it did uninstall after putting the application into the trash and tempting the trash.

This is awful software, it's marginally helpful, and it defies all of the normal features!

Unfortunately, a new mess just popped up called MegaBackup. It tries to lure you to a 3rd party iCloud backup.

Here we go, again !

Just a follow-up,

MegaBackup was installed on my system in the same installer that downloaded CyberDuck.

Unlike MacKeeper, it would not got to the Trash from the Applications Folder.

It said it would not delete because it was running.

I went into the Activity Monitor and found it running, so I did a FORCE QUIT ( it does not show up in the FORCE QUIT from the Apple menu, because it is running the in the background).

Then I moved the application to the Trash.

An Admin authorization screen popped up to ask for the Admin Password (That's OK, because it requires Admin permissions to delete it).

Then another proprietary splash screen popped up to re-install the app. Choose "No Thanks" on the left side (not highlighted and no radio button).

I hate this kind of tricky software and I will never use it, just because it's so sneaky and nefarious.

I'm planning to find a different FTP program, too. I'm sorry CyberDuck allows this kind of hi-jacking software in their installer.

When you install Cyber Duck, it's OK to say ACCEPT to the first prompt, but the second two prompts are for malware (MacKeeper and MegaBackup).

Don't download, accept, or every use either of these products. They are not viruses, but they ARE malware.

Where did you download Cyberduck from? Did you have to run an installer?

I download from the developers siteand there's no installer involved, just the app which you put in the Applications folder. No malware is involved this way. Any time there's an installer involved there's a chance that there could be malware included as you found out.

I used all the techniques mentioned and I still could not get rid of Mac Keeper.

As long as the helperamc process is running in your activity monitor you will have trouble.

Go to the activity monitor. Click on the helperamc process. Select the blue inspect button. Click on Open Files & Ports.

Inside this view you will see the directories that are being used by helperamc and Mac Keeper.

Also, you will need to turn off file hiding. Mac Keeper itself stays hidden from view.

You will need to check your username/library file for several of these folders:

Files to look for have amc included in the filenames.

Application Support

Caches

Launchagent

Logs

Preferences

Drag all mackeeper files to the trash bin.

Once you get rid of all related mac keeper files, then you need to quit the helperamc process in the activity monitor.

It may take a couple of tries

Even after successfully preventing the helperamc process from running, you will still need to check to make sure none of those files have re-appeared or helperamc has started running again in the Activity monitor.

After restarting your computer, it would be a good idea to rebuild permissions.

Good luck.

Hey everyone!

as a load of you know the OX S El Captain was released late 2015. I have the solution to deleting any apps you dont want. In this specific case the app mackeeper.

Step 1: Go into trash

Step 2: Search any unwanted item in the search bar at the top right

Step 3: Once you found this unwanted item drag it into the trash bin and empty it so it has no access to create a new virus in your Apple product

And there you have it everyone! Hope this helped!

My mother-in-law, and eventually I, had the same problem! These people are finding a way to circumvent Apple's security. I still don't know how I got it. But I got rid of it! Hopefully, those scoundrels won't read this!

1. Remove the actual program from you Applications folder, and empty your Trash. However, this step is not enough! You'll notice that there is a fake window that pops up now and then (sometimes with an offer for other types of software!), even comes with it's own closing button. You can't move it either. Don't press anywhere on it! This is part of starting the installation cycle all over again!

2. Restart or Shutdown your computer. Because their window pops up, this tells me that it is launching from the start. Open the Activity Monitor, and look over activities that have an Apps Icon (an A made up of a pen, pencil, and ruler). I noticed helperamc (it will probably change if 'they' are reading this) that was launching. Just quitting it doesn't work.

3. Cick on the "...amc," click the i icon on top for more info. Click on Open Files and Ports (I was worried that this would open files and ports, but just shows currently OPENED files and ports). You'll see where the file is hidden. Copy the file path.

4. Open Finder. In the Menu of Finder, click on Go then Go To Folder. Paste where the file is hidden in the Finder window. Find it in the results and throw it in the Trash, and empty the Trash. The window on my desktop immediately went away!

I hope this was helpful, and maybe Apple will have a fix soon!
