Change my "Apple ID and Primary Email Address" to my @me.com address

So I have a gmail email address that I have been using as my Apple ID for quite some time now. When iCloud was launched I added a @me.com address to this account so I could take advantage of the notes syncing feature of iCloud.

I now want to start using my @me.com email address as my only email address and shut down the gmail account completely. Only problem is when I go to appleid.apple.com and try and change my "Apple ID and Primary Email Address" to be the @me one it tells me "You cannot create an Apple ID using a MobileMe account. If this is your email address, it is also your Apple ID".

All I want to do is remove the gmail address off the account and continue using the @me iCloud email that is attached to the account anyway. Why is this proving to be so hard?

Hi everyone!

I figured out how to at least change my PRIMARY EMAIL to my @me account, so that I don't get receipts and other communications at an old, unused non-Apple email address! Try this:

1) Use your browser to go to the Apple Store website. In the USA, it is: http://store.apple.com/us

2) Hover on ACCOUNT on the upper right, then scroll down and click on ACCOUNT HOME PAGE

3) Click on CHANGE YOUR DEFAULT SHIPPING OR BILLING INFO down on the left

4) Log in with your Apple ID and password

5) Click EDIT under PAYMENT INFORMATION

6) Enter your preferred email address where your old, defunct email address appears

7) Click SAVE

Thanks denischu, now my Gmail address is merely a username and that's all. I still wish I could be rid of it completely though.

I got excited when I went to appleid.apple.com and it offered to "Make your Apple ID and primary email address one and the same", except I looked closer and the only option was to make them both my Gmail address again. It's like Apple is actively trying to make me continue using my old email account!

I too have finallymanaged to change my primary email address to my @me.com address (from my old btinternet.com isp address) by going through the process outlined by denisschu.

However I now get the same 'warning' as andymaltby suggesting I should make my apple id and my primary address the same - but only giving my old btinternet.com option for this!! I am hoping that if I just ignore this that at least I will have managed to get any apple emails etc coming to only my me.com address (my alternate address is also the same me.com address).

Do you think there will be any downsides to this? I also called Apple support (before I had followed this process) but they didnt seem to follow me at all but she did say she thoght Apple were working on the apple id system and that because of this she couldnt elevate my enquiry any further up the command chain right now!!

I feel your pain...

I thought maybe, until Apple gets it together, forwarding my email from my gmail account to my me.com would work. I don't like using my gmail account as my ID and/or Primary, but at least most everyone has my me.com address now and I only need my iTunes receipts and Apple info forwarded from the gmail account. It's a pain for now but a partial immediate solution until the smart thing is done from APPLE....hello Apple! Are you listening?

You can stop iTunes & Apple emails from going to the old address by changing your primary email address to your @me account via the Apple Store website. Then your old address will be a username and nothing more.

If you still receive emails at the old address after doing the above, remove it as an alternative address by doing this:

1) Go to https://appleid.apple.com

2) Click MANAGE YOUR ACCOUNT

3) Sign in

4) Click DELETE next to the bad address under ALTERNATE EMAIL ADDRESSES

Good luck!

Awesome! I've made the changes and everything went well. Let's hope it works.

But funny....Apples tech response notes:

Make your Apple ID and primary email address one and the same.

Your Apple ID will be easier to remember, and your account will be easier to access and manage.

Change your Apple ID and primary email address to: "bad address"

HA....Not!

Change my "Apple ID and Primary Email Address" to my @me.com address
