Change my "Apple ID and Primary Email Address" to my @me.com address

So I have a gmail email address that I have been using as my Apple ID for quite some time now. When iCloud was launched I added a @me.com address to this account so I could take advantage of the notes syncing feature of iCloud.

I now want to start using my @me.com email address as my only email address and shut down the gmail account completely. Only problem is when I go to appleid.apple.com and try and change my "Apple ID and Primary Email Address" to be the @me one it tells me "You cannot create an Apple ID using a MobileMe account. If this is your email address, it is also your Apple ID".

All I want to do is remove the gmail address off the account and continue using the @me iCloud email that is attached to the account anyway. Why is this proving to be so hard?

I've got a similar problem. Would love to change the "Apple ID and Primary Email Address" to my newly made iCloud address. Would love to even just change the "Alternate Apple ID" so that my new iCloud address acts the same as my original gmail account. My problem is that I already have an "Alternate Apple ID" (another account I'd made, but do not wish to use) and I can't find a way of changing it. Really frustrating.

Hello Apple,

We appreciate your efforts to wean yourselves, and us, off of Google's maps. I have set out, myself, to wean off of Gmail, and use iCloud e-mail as my primary e-mail. Why do you insist that I need to keep my @gmail.com as my Apple ID? Why can't my Apple-owned domain e-mail be my primary, and a non-Apple owned e-mail be my secondary e-mail in my Apple ID account?

As a matter of fact, the entire Apple ID account management system is really confusing, and counterintuitive. Not good. This should be a first priority. Just makes you look sloppy, and one of the reasons why we pay more upfront for Apple devices is to avoid sloppy-ness.

Please consider this an official request from many frustrated users.

I'm with everyone else. I have an AOL address as my apple ID, but a @icloud email that i would like to use. Now just so you know, when you are asked for your apple id you can enter the @me address or the @icloud address. I believe this is what they mean by "make them one and the same", because as it stands it doesn't look like they are allowing us to use an apple domain for an ID, which is asenine to say the least. I did go to the account store as you have suggested and it now seems all is well.

thanks for taking the time.

Thank you very much for this excellent tip denischu!

I am currently waiting for a new Mac Mini that I have ordered and wanted to change my Apple ID's primary email address from my BT Internet email address to my iCloud email Address. When my new Mac Mini arrives I will be able to take full advantage of iCloud, which I haven't been able to do using Mac OS X 10.6.8 on my old Mac Mini.

My Apple ID is still my BT Internet email address, but only in name and will not send any emails to that account. I can live with this! 🙂

Once again denischu - THANK YOU! 🙂

Still no further forward with this. Still need to use a non-Apple domain as the primary account. I can see all the reasons why you might need to have a secondary email account for Apple to mail you in case iCloud goes down (not without precedent!) or if your account gets locked or frozen.

The problem for me is that I'd like that OTHER email account to be the secondary, not the primary account. As it is I'm forced to not only keep the other account (unused for anything except as an Apple ID), I'm also forced to keep it on my devices, cluttering the Mail interface in case Apple decides to mail me on it.

It would be mush easier IMO if Apple

1) Allowed you select your @me/icloud address as your Apple ID AND your primary address

2) Allows a secondary ID that must be non-Apple (if they insist) that is not used unless 1) fails for some reason.

I figured out how to at least change my PRIMARY EMAIL to my @me account, so that I don't get receipts and other communications at an old, unused non-Apple email address! Try this:

1) Use your browser to go to the Apple Store website. In the USA, it is: http://store.apple.com/us

2) Hover on ACCOUNT on the upper right, then scroll down and click on ACCOUNT HOME PAGE

3) Click on CHANGE YOUR DEFAULT SHIPPING OR BILLING INFO down on the left

4) Log in with your Apple ID and password

5) Click EDIT under PAYMENT INFORMATION

6) Enter your preferred email address where your old, defunct email address appears

7) Click SAVE

Change my "Apple ID and Primary Email Address" to my @me.com address
