My Samsung SE-S084F dvd burner, used with lion for months is now suddenly unsupported. Why?

My Samsung SE-S084F dvd burner, used with lion for months is now suddenly unsupported... how can it be possible? I can now read cd/dvd but trying to burn them gives me "Internal error". Disk Utility report: "Burn support: not supported".

I burned my last dvd three days ago, running lion 10.7.3. The only thing I can think of is a software update done few days ago, something about java.

Samsung says that lion isn't officially supported, but i've used it a lot and I know it works…

Things that i've tried:

1) reboot

2) firmware update

3) many different burning software including "drutil" from the shell

4) I've tested the device on another computer (ubuntu 11) and it works like a charm

Additional information (drutil info):

Vendor Product Rev

TSSTcorp CDDVDW SE-S084F TS00

Interconnect: USB

SupportLevel: Unsupported

Profile Path: None

Cache: 1536k

CD-Write: -R, -RW, BUFE, CDText, Test, IndexPts, ISRC

DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RAM, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW, BUFE, Test

Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO

Any tips? Thanks.

Any burning software-OTHER, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

For some reason, the serial number of my device is not recognised by samsung support page, and i can't procede with the support request.

Anyway, they say that lion is unsupported, i don't think they would help, also whatever made it stop working was done by apple in the last few days, not samsung.

I'd like to known if anyone else with the SE-S084F is still able to use it with lion fully updated.

I don't know... the only thing that could have modified the system is the software update...

I'm not writing here to "accuse" apple, if i did, well that was not my intention, english is not my main language and sometimes i write misundertandable things.

The facts is that i'm kinda frustrated by this problem... i have this pice of hardware that had always worked well and still works (on other computers), it's surely not changed so the problem must be in my OS, some changes must have been done by me or by the software updates.

In these days i've done my regular web surfing, music listening, text writing... i can't think of anything related to the burner problem... I've checked the console for clues but found nothing, i don't know how to troubleshoot this problem.

Ok... adding some info:

- I've tried another usb dvd burner borrowed by a friend and it behave exacly the same, I know it should work on lion and now i'm almost sure the problem is in my lion installation

- I've tried burning a CD-RW and it works perfecly

It's like it refuse to burn DVD without even trying.

I dont want to reinstall the OS again just for being able to burn DVDs 😟

Adding other info, it's getting even more weird...

I've tried booting from an old snow leopard backup, and surprise... the devise still doesn't work!!! same error!

It doesn't make any sense...

It's not broken but both SL and Lion on my MBP refuse to burn DVDs (they both burned a lot of them with that device in the past).

Same thing using the other USB burner borrowed by a friend, so i'm sure it's not a cable problem... what does remain? Mac's USB hardware failure? Impossible. On my SL backup there was installed Parallels desktop with an old ubuntu virtual machine configured, i've tried burning from it and it worked...

OSX (LS or Lion) + My MBP + USB Burner = fail

Ubuntu + My MBP + USB Burner = success

Ubuntu + Another computer + USB Burner = success

The could be some "broken" low level hardware bounded parameters, used only by OSX. I've already wiped NVRAM and PRAM, are there any other things i can try to wipe?

What do you mean when you say "it is not seen"? Does it show up as "Unsupported" or it doesn't show up at all?

I've learned that almost every not-apple burner are flagged "Unsupported" even if they work well, now my samsung is still "Unsupported" but it works.

The too long name file, was one of the files i was trying to burn, it was something like:

[CCC]_CCCC_CCCCCC_CCCC_12344576_qwertyuiop_CCCCC_CCCCC_ .... _CCC.MP4

Hey guys,

I know this thread is years old, so if I get no reply, I will begin a new one, but here goes:

I, too, own an Samsung SE - S084F and my problem is that I can no longer launch Madden 08 (or any game, for that matter) from the said optical drive on OS X Mountain Lion. I've gone through all of the motions (I've been a mac user since forever), PRAM, NVRAM, PMU, verify permissions, repair disc, etc, etc, etc - nothing works. When launching the game the way I have done oh so many times, it says "no disc/can not locate disc," when said disc just so happens to be clearly sat on my desktop just below my hard drive, Mr. Spinny. I can reinstall the game, but it won't let me launch from my Applications menu while using the optical drive as the keygen (standard mac copywrite protection).

I have a 2007 Macbook Pro and when checking in "About This Mac," everything seems supported and fine.

Any sollutions? Of course Samsung has no driver updates whatsoever, but this is crazy because my optical drive no longer works, and the samsung was working fine until the OS X Mountain Lion Upgrade.

Many thanks for any help 🙂
