Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

authorization is required

whenever I try to play purchased movies on Apple TV, I get Authorization is required. I have played these movies many times for months. Nothing changed in the setup to cause the error.

apple TV home sharing is on (turned off and back on)

home sharing is on on the Mac (turned off and back on)

computer is authorized (when I authorize, it says already authorized)

computer deauthorized and reauthorized - then home sharing turned back on

it shows the movie partially played and gives the option to continue, so it knows it has been played before

Yet no purchased movies will play on Apple TV.

Updated software on Apple TV and upgraded to latest version of Itunes. same thing.

Infuriating!!!!!!

Why does Apple TV or iTunes think that the computer is not authorized - or something else is wrong, triggering this message? HELP!

Did I waste a lot of money buying movies that I can't watch on the system bought with other wasted money?

Power cycling is not a fix. Just a mere BandAid. I wonder what is actually causing this?

AppleTVs have ALWAYS been bad at re-establishing lost network connectiosn to iTunes.

I've assumed there was a software flag which once set to reflect 'no itunes available', 'iTunes connection lost' or similar that it never bothered to refresh and always assumed this was the case until a reboot.

For me these problems had been rare with AppleTV2/3 until the latest update (5.01)

Interesting.

I've had the Authorization problems way before 5.X.

Not as frequent, but they'd show up once in a week or two.

But I agree, the latest build of ATV OS has gotten bad in this regard.

Not once did I have an issue playing a movie or show via direct iTunes stream, but as soon as I play from my own library, it's a whole different ball game.

I wouldn't mind streaming all day long, if Comcast wasn't capping me off @ 250 GB each month.

I've converted hundreds of my own DVDs to iTunes format and those require no authorization, but in all honesty, who is supposed to remember whcih movies were bought and which were ripped from one's own DVD?

As I love Apple TV, their organizational structure of navigation makes me shake my head. Your home made iMovies being mixed with Hollywood movies being the worst of the worst nuissances for me.

For home movies you could just create a custom Home Movies genre, but I know what you mean.

It's been a long time since I've had to restart the AppleTVs when I select them as the Av input, but now it's virtually 90%of the time - wired or wireless.

I mentioned to Winston that I thought the interface was a lot more sluggish and seems slow to populate icons, but it may be my imagination. These things are subjective but when you sense them immediately after an update.....

no matter what combination of power on/off, home sharing on/off, internet connected or not - authorization is always required - I can never watch movies via Air Play. Can only play with PC connection to TV - I give up, can only spend so many hours on this. What a shame - great idea - just does not work.

Complete egg on Apple's face. Can't beleive they won't address the issue.

Now, this is strange.

Have you escalated this to Apple? You've purchased a product (movie) and have every right for support, no matter whether your Apple hardware is in warranty or not.

iTunes store has always helped me to resolve my issue, whenever I had one.

If I were you, I'd submit an inquiry below. They will e-mail you back. Usually within 24 hours.

iTunes

iTunes Store

Pick the most fitting Category

If not listed, choose "Not Listed" and describe the issue later on

This is definitely worth submitting.

If we don't, it won't get fixed.

This is the best way to get Apple's attention on this topic.

I have this same issue. I recently moved and had the issue before and after I moved.

I also have the issue where the Home Sharing where the AppleTV (3rd gen) doesn't recognize my iTunes running on my computer. It usually happens if I let it go to sleep, then try to watch something later. I always have to shut down iTunes and restart it.

I had this very issue today with my Apple TV 3rd Generation. I have Moutain Lion OS on iMac and latest updates on apple tv. I restored my apple tv to factory settings and re-did home sharing, network etc. and that fixed the issue, but was a pain the arse!

It seems there is a bug with Apple TV. I never had this issue until I purchased Hunger Games and tried to play it.

If you reset your apple TV that usually fixes it, but is a pain as it takes about 20 minutes each time to do that.

I've just had this same problem, bought Prometheus, won't play on either my ATV 2, or 3. All the other content will play on it. It's been more than frustrating that the best support will do is send me to links on the support page. Which I had tried all ready, then send me to the discussion pages. Don't think they have a clue on this problem.

Same exact issue with Prometheus purchased via iTunes. Movie will not play via Apple TV 2nd gen (720P) with same autorization error. However I can play Prometheus via my Mac without issue. Also I can play other Itunes purchased movies via my Apple TV without issue. I can only play Prometheus via my Apple TV if I stream it from iCloud. Weird.

Hi, I just bought a movie on iTunes, I downloaded it with my MacBook Air, then I saved it into my iTunes library on my brand new Time Capsule. With FileBrowser App, I can acces and watch the movie in my authorized iPhone, but when I click on "AirPlay" so I can watch the movie on my Apple TV, the Apple TV sends me a message that it doesn´t have autorization to play it. All 3 devices have the same Apple ID and and are supposed to be authorized. ! can watch the movie on my MacBook Air and on my iPhone from the Time Capsule, and I can watch the movie on Apple TV directly, but I can´t AirPlay the movie from iPhone to AppleTV.

Any suggestions on how getting this solved?

I tried everything I could find on the net including rebooting and re authorizing and unauthroizing ad nauseum but finally I did a full Reset on my Apple TV and that fixed it. This is a reset not restart and spends a significant amount of time reloading updates etc. and then you need to re enter WiFi passwords and Apple ID but then it was fine.

I hope this helps someone as I have spent a week trying to get this fixed.

I KNOW HOW TO FIX THIS

if you are getting this error,

1. go into your itunes on your computer.

2. go to the movie tab and right click on the movie in question.

3. in the menu that pops up click "Get Info"

4. now of all this information it gives you, in the right column about half way down it shows what username the movie was purchased under.

5. If you are like me and share your purchases with your family who have different usernames, sometimes a movie will not have been purchased under MY apple id. therefore you must authorize your computer by putting in the apple id and password of the person who did.

this should fix your problem

authorization is required
