Anyone using the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 with Logic?

I am looking to replace my Tascam US-122 with something of similar size/inputs. I've watched some videos and seen some reviews about the Scarlett 2i2, but I was wondering if anyone has any personal experience using it with Logic. I am wanting to make sure it will run with the 64-bit version of Logic that I am running on Lion. Currently to get my US-122 to work, i have to boot the computer in 32-bit mode or else my computer does not read the interface. I have also heard good things about the inputs in the Scarlett 2i2, and about Focusrite preamps in general, but I have never used them before. At this point, anything will be an upgrade from the Tascam unit that is starting to go faulty on me. This Focusrite unit seems like it could be exactly what I am looking for, I am just looking to see what others have to say about using it with their setups.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3), 2.8 GHz

hi,

may i add something please?

i am new in this field.

is there any reason for me, to buy the Scarlett 2i2 for my simple-beginner setup?

most people recommend an external soundcard, but i dont know why?

- "macbook pro 2010 i7" 10.8.4 and soon "macbook air 2013 i7" 10.8.4

- logic pro 9

- no audio recording, no guitar, no mic/voice recording (maybe much later midi usb-keyboard)

- Speakers "KRK RP5 Rokit G2" with y-cable into macbook pro

thanks!

Probably not, since you're not doing any audio recording. If your system is working for you, there's no need to change....

.....However, the reasons for buying an external soundcard are many:

1. Better sound, consider that the computers internal audio chip probably cost Apple a couple of dollars, is noisy and has uneven frequency response. Obviously, if you're creating music, sound is important.

2. Logic is a professional program and was designed with professional hardware in mind. Or at least used to be.

3. Variety of Input/Output channels. Some audio interfaces offer 8, 16 or even 24 Microphone, Line In or Digital inputs and can be used for recording a live band.

4. Most audio interfaces have a high quality headphone out, many have 2 headphone outs and can configure separate headphone mixes for multiple players.

5. Another 3 or 4 reasons I can't remember.

hi pancenter,

thanks for your help!

so, would the "Scarlett 2i4" soundcard be the right one for these purposes, please?:

- produce digital music with mbp and logic pro 9 in 32bit or 24bit quality > bounced to 320bit mp3

- listen with my AKG K701 headphones directly

- sometimes plugin bass guitar of my friend

- sometimes plug in samson g-track mic (not same time with bass guitar)

- plugin external piano keyboard "korg sp-250" (midi?) and record piano playing

- plugin 2 x xlr from "KRK RP5 rokit" monitor speakers

oder better the focusrite i-track solo?

(or wait 6 month for thunderbolt or usb3.0 soundcards, cause it would provide more quality/less latency than usb2.0? dont know...)

thanks

Yes on 24-bit music, the soundcard does not affect the bounce format, you can bounce to 320-bit mp3 now if you choose.

Yes on listening with the AKG headphones

Yes on plugging in a Bass Guitar

The G-Track Mic IS an audio interface/mixer and would not be used at the same time as the Focusrite.

Yes on the MIDI Piano Keyboard, the Scarlett has a MIDI interface built in.

Yes the Focusrite Scarlett have "balanced" 1/4" outputs for powered speakers.

My recommendation would be to wait until you Clearly define what you need!

thanks pancenter.

so i would buy the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4

i am only a bit curious, if usb3.0 instead of 2.0 would offer better quality regarding latency with logic pro 9? in realtime, i guess usb 2.0 will fit my needs 100%. i sometimes (every 10 minutes) have latency issues with my macbookpro, AKG K701 headphones in macbookpro and logic pro 9, but it doesnt bother me at all, cause its so rare.

i just wonder if all external soundcard companies will change the usb-port to 3.0 next year?

or even thunderbolt?

btw, I'm not affiliated with Focusrite or any company..

I can't honestly tell what is right for you and I don't know about USB 3.0 as there isn't much out there using it, same with Thunderbolt, there's not a lot of adopters yet and that's the only way to tell, to have a variety of hardware using the format.

Theoretically USB 3.0 would offer better performance but we just have to wait and see. :-\
