Hi Speed Internet?

How does a Hi Speed internet connection help when the internal modem is so s-l-o-w?

17in iMac G5, Mac OS X (10.3.5), 2GB

Because high speed internet - also called broadband - uses the ethernet card to get a faster connection. Typical DSL speeds are 1.5mbps and cable runs around 4mbps.

If you are referring to those dialup "High Speed" connections, they just use a different compression method that allows larger packets of data to be sent and received over a typical 56k line. The connection isn't any faster, the compression just makes it seem faster.

It's still dialup and it is still slow.

Yes you do and your broadband provider will usually provide one to you. A lot of times local retailers like Best Buy will have promotions with local BB ISPs where you buy the modem from Best Buy and sign up for service with your local provider through them and you will get a rebate for the price of the modem and maye even a gift card or something as freebie.

Best Buy gets a kickback from the ISP and you get a free modem. Sounds like a good deal for everyone.
