In Apple mail, the attachment symbol does not appear in the list of sent items

In Apple mail, the attachment symbol does not appear in the list of sent items. So you cannot sort sent emails based on whether or not they have an attachment. Is there a way to fix this?

Excellent!! Worked perfectly!

However, the next Sent message that had attachments did not show the paperclip, until I reapplied the Paperclip rule (by editing the rule, changing back to its previous definition, and Applying to the open Sent folder).

So we still must await Apple to fix this. Your approach does allow me to periodically update the Sent folder, so thanks at least for that.

None of these suggestions have worked for me either. Dissapointing upgrade on several fronts — mail, calendar (why can't you you set the snooze for specific times anymore?) and Mission control feature replacing Spaces is a squirrel nut job trying to manage. don't mean to get off topic, but c'mon, am I the only one who isn't seeing these new "improvements" improveing anything? Are the industrial designers writing the software now?

Hallelujah!

After completely stumping several Apple Store Geniuses, and after Yoyodine ArtWorks' solution not working for me as well, the solution posted above by hic66 worked perfectly (in 10.8.4).

This bug appeared in Mail as of the Lion OS (I can look at messages saved in any of my custom Mail folders, and just by seeing where the Attachments column suddenly goes blank I can tell where the change from Snow Leopard to Lion happened), and it's truly astounding -- not to mention downright embarrassing -- that it STILL hasn't been fixed.

But THANK YOU for posting that -- being able to quickly see which of my messages contained attachments, and how many were attached in each case -- is a feature I genuinely need, and use often.

Attachments column in Mac Mail - how to display information?

I typed those last lines in the hope that other frustrated users will be more easily able to find this thread when Googling their search for a solution to a bug Apple should have fixed a VERY long time ago.

Thank you again!

Unfortunately, this having to re-apply the Rule is a semi-BigDeal for me, since beyond just my Sent folder, I've created dozens of new Mailbox folders and sub-folders over the years, into which I archive any messages I might need to refer to at a later time, each stored in a folder designated with a very specific topic, project, etc.

And I notice when I just select all those folders, the "Apply Rules" function is grayed out -- I only seem to be able to use it when I actually select a range of messages WITHIN a particular folder.

SO...

1) Is there any way to highlight all messages within a selection of multiple Mailbox folders?

2) Or a way to have this rule automatically re-apply itself to all messages contained in specified mailboxes?

3) And even if there is, the mere fact we have to create and apply special "Rules" in the first place, just to get back some basic functionality that got carelessly scrambled as of Lion -- and >>> STILL <<< hasn't been fixed -- is beyond ludicrous, and utterly inexcusable.

C'mon Apple -- how many bug reports are we supposed to keep filing? This is embarrassing. Just fix this. Not next week, not next month, not when the number of users filing feedback complaints reaches some magic number. Just fix it. Now.

Hi...Thank you all for instructions.

I followed the instructions w one change, as I like to see every email that has attachments, ones received and ones sent...all.

so I choose "every message" instead of my email address:

Also have a 'Smart Mailbox' in Mac Mail that shows all emails w attachments (had made that first before the rule...it is handy at times)User uploaded fileUser uploaded file

Thanks for all the posts for a solution and it appears that I had the same problem before and resurrected its head again recently with my Mavericks 10.9.5. Sorry to post in a ML thread, but Google can find it. 😉

It seems that I had had the problem before and had already setup a Rule to "Add Attachment Paperclip" previously. Probably when using Snow Leopard. (see image below.)

But it wasn't working, at least not until I remembered to and selected ALL messages in my Sent mailbox, and clicked the "Apply Rules" from the drop down menu. Obvious to some but nothing worked until I did that and the Rebuilds I had done didn't seem to fix much.

So thanks to whoever was the originator for my solution and I can't recall where I found it, but maybe here originally.

Anyway, this info is in case it helps anyone and the problem still seems to exist.

Man oh man, do I ever miss Eudora that ALWAYS JUST WORKED!!!
