iPhone 4s Call Volume Too Low

So all of a sudden the call volume on my iPhone 4s has dropped to just a whisper. This happened this weekend unexpectedly. I have checked the forum for similar issues but not found anything that is applicable since

A) I don't have the plastic cover on the front or anything else blocking the speaker on the front.

B) I have tried to increase the call volume while in a call without success.

C) I have had the phone for months without any call volume issues

The only solutions right now are to use an earpiece or put calls on speaker (which I can't do at work). I have tried a hard reset and that did not help. Tonight I will try a reinstall from a previous backup to see if that helps.

Any other suggestions?

I accidentally solved this problem, at least on my wife's phone. Do this at your own risk, of course - I have no idea if this voids warrantee. Anyway, volume was extremely low, and I tried everything to fix it with no luck. While messing around I ended up poking a hole in the ear speaker with a safety pin. Suddenly the volume was loud as ever. Good luck.

I actually found the fix somewhere else in these discussion forums. Go to settings / sounds and slide the volume all the way off (to the left). That fixed it for me; the earpiece volume is back to normal. And I can now turn the ringer volume back up to wherever it was before and the earpiece volume is still ok. Must be a bug.

Adrian,

Just wanted to thank you for this solution. My iPhone 4S just suddenly developed this problem this morning. The call volume was fine on speakerphone, but suddenly extremely muted in regular call mode. I tried rebooting the phone, and that had no effect. The settings/sounds solution above worked immediately. Thanks again!

This is a very simple problem to fix for most cases:

Take a natural hair paintbrush (or anything with bristles softer than the ones on a soft toothbrush) and gently clean out the earpiece grille with a side-to-side motion. Then use the brush (and this is why it has to be natural hair) and gently push the bristles onto the earpiece grille (that is, perpendicular to its surface). Natural hair bristles are tapered at the tips, and they can pierce and dislodge dirt which has clogged the grille mesh to the extent that it attenuates volume considerably.

Try this and let me know if it works.

Ok guys I tried what I have read in the post wi no luck, so I was about to take it tomorrow morning to the Apple store and have it checked when I did another search online and found a solution on this website ifixit.com

This may sound weird but they say if you place your mouth over the ear piece and with a sucking motion try to unclog the ear piece. I tried this my self, covered my mouth over the ear piece and sucked in air, I found it difficult to suck in air though it, so I got a q-tip and with a drop or two of water cleaed the earpiece section, next I tried once again to suck air through it and guess what? Air came through more easily. I made a call to test it out and all back to normal volume. :) worked as they said it will. Lots of post that people have done the same thing and it worked for them aswell.

I had the same problem with the incoming call volume being too low. A co-worker had me hold the on/off button and home button down at the same time. This turned off the phone and back on. The sound volume was set to low but once I reset it to high the problem was fixed. As I read the blog before I fixed the phone I was getting concerned about having to purchas a new phone but now I am a happy camper.😀
