iPhone 4s Call Volume Too Low

So all of a sudden the call volume on my iPhone 4s has dropped to just a whisper. This happened this weekend unexpectedly. I have checked the forum for similar issues but not found anything that is applicable since

A) I don't have the plastic cover on the front or anything else blocking the speaker on the front.

B) I have tried to increase the call volume while in a call without success.

C) I have had the phone for months without any call volume issues

The only solutions right now are to use an earpiece or put calls on speaker (which I can't do at work). I have tried a hard reset and that did not help. Tonight I will try a reinstall from a previous backup to see if that helps.

Any other suggestions?

Yes, this worked. Electric toothbrush with water, quick scrub and suck. Loud again...I cannot even believe it.

I had this problem too and I was able to fix it by applying some MEK solution to a cotton bud and drenching the earpiece (within reason) wit it, subsequently cleaning out the wire mesh over the ear piece of ear wax and other dust fragments.

I hope this helps anyone stuck!

Take a paintbrush.. with slow movement from left to right, brush off the dust layer over the speaker.. you will experience instant increase in the volume. It worked for my phone.

Here's a novel solution - maybe you have a bad receiver. After brushing and sucking until I was blue in the face, I took my iPhone 4S up to the Apple Store and let Apple Guy take a look at it. He said I have a bad receiver. Cost to replace: $199.00. Cost of a new, iPhone 6 16G phone: $199.00.

New iPhone on the way . . .

Exactly - good call. I took my iPhone to the Apple store, tech guy checked it out and that's exactly what the problem was. I am not the proud owner of an iPhone 6.

Same problem developed for me this morning; making the earphone slightly damp and sucking worked for me.

Worked perfectly. I used a tiny drop of my aftershave and did the blowing thing.

1. Initially use a soft-tipped thing like a toothpick (with the tip blunted slightly) and remove the thicker dust from the earpiece grill.

2. Use alcoholic liquid like aftershave and put a drop on the grill.

3 Blow with your mouth, sucking and blowing alternatively.

Voila! Let there be sound...

I am going to say you are the MAN! If you are female then you are the woman! I did as you instructed and it worked perfect. Good as new again! I am so grateful!! 🙂 One little thing if you do not mind me sticking my nose in.. Instead of water on the Q-tip, use isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. It loosens the crud better and is easier on internal components.Thanks again for posting this!! Funny how sometimes the low tech fix works the best!😀
