iPhone 4s Call Volume Too Low

So all of a sudden the call volume on my iPhone 4s has dropped to just a whisper. This happened this weekend unexpectedly. I have checked the forum for similar issues but not found anything that is applicable since

A) I don't have the plastic cover on the front or anything else blocking the speaker on the front.

B) I have tried to increase the call volume while in a call without success.

C) I have had the phone for months without any call volume issues

The only solutions right now are to use an earpiece or put calls on speaker (which I can't do at work). I have tried a hard reset and that did not help. Tonight I will try a reinstall from a previous backup to see if that helps.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks, cleaning worked for me (for the microphone).

I've had my 4 for about 2.5 years and never had this problem, but my wife has only had an iphone (4s) for about 2 months and had the problem. We both put our phones in our pockets, but I discovered that she sometimes puts tissues in the same pocket after I noticed a large amount of very fine line on her phone today (after I had fixed it just a few days ago). Maybe tissue lint contributes significantly to causing this problem.(?)

My volume started really low when I first bought my iPhone. Then i realized I still had the plastic screen protector on that comes with the phone. There's no hole for the speaker. Obviously, this doesn't apply to all of you who've owned your phones for a number of months and just started experiencing the problem, but I think it just might work for some of you new iPhone users out there.

Hi thank you for advice I tried all the settings fiddles with no luck and the sucking the earpiece thing.

I then gave up and used an earbud with a little bit of water so it was damp.

I did have to pull the fibres a bit so the cotton could get in contact with the earpiece and clean it - which it did perfectly.

Maybe apple should produce a cleaning kit for each phone they release to reduce these problems?

I had exactly the same problem (3GS). Phone works fine on speaker but earpiece (not headphone, not earphone) volume sudenly was very quiet.

I actually found the fix somewhere else in these discussion forums. Go to settings / sounds and slide the volume all the way off (to the left). That fixed it for me; the earpiece volume is back to normal. And I can now turn the ringer volume back up to wherever it was before and the earpiece volume is still ok. Must be a bug.

This worked for me! Thanks for the fix!
