    I have this problem too. The volume is fine when music is playing. In a phone calll, the volume is fine through headphones or speaker. It's just when I normally take calls. I didn't drop my phone or get it wet. The plastic is off. I've had this phone since October and it's just now like this. I also turned it off and on several times.

    I have the same problem, though mine seems to come and go. I don't think I can use the phone in this way becasue speaker is just not practicle for me. I was waiting for the iphone 5 to hit before using my upgrade but if I'm forced due to this issue to use it I'll have to shy away from apple as I don't want another 4 nor do I want a 4S. Please help me Apple.

    I guess no one has come up with a solution to this?  unacceptable!   just wanted to say that my iphone 4 has never been updated to iOS5- and it has the same issue, all of a sudden I can barely hear my incoming calls, but put them on speaker and it's fine.   just wait to see if mine 'magically' fixes itself like some others?  bah, humbug.

    ok, now my bf tells me he upgraded it without telling me- so it is related to the update!  I took advice on some other forums, it helped a little:

    put on ear buds, listened to a song, turned up the volume while it was playing.  I made a call, on ear buds, while talking turned it up, (it was already full up)  hit 'speaker', made sure it was all the way up, turned off speaker, again turned it up.  this didn't do much.  I then changed languages from english to french (any lang will do) and then back to english-choose a language you can find your way back thru settings- a warning...

    I also played a song, went to voice memo, turned it on, waited, then off again.

    the sound improved, but it's def not right-  still better than nothing....

    I just upgraded to 5.1.1 and it didn't help with the call volume. I had this problem before the upgrade.

    Sorry it was only incremental increase.  She had to go to apple store and they replaced the phone.

    Having the same issues although also experiencing problems whilst playing music. The volume output is very low in both cases despite having the volume option turned up to max. I've also noticed the sound quality whilst playing music has detoriated.

     

    I've tried with other earpiece/headphones, reset all phone settings etc. and same issues. I remember when I first bought the phone the sound volume and quality was fine. As much as I like Apple products, if this issue isn't fixed I'll be looking for a full refund.

     

    When you buy a multimedia phone device, you expect 2 things to work flawlessly; telephone calls and music playback. In the case of the 4S both are very poor. I'd be better off strapping a Samsung to my 5 year old iPod!

     

    It's also clear if you do a search on this issue with sound problems on the 4S you will see a lot of other customers have the same issue, yet I have not found a single response from Apple.

    I had exactly the same problem (3GS).  Phone works fine on speaker but earpiece (not headphone, not earphone) volume sudenly was very quiet.

     

    I actually found the fix somewhere else in these discussion forums.  Go to settings / sounds and slide the volume all the way off (to the left).  That fixed it for me; the earpiece volume is back to normal.  And I can now turn the ringer volume back up to wherever it was before and the earpiece volume is still ok.  Must be a bug.

    Hey, thanks, Adrian!  That helped get it to where I could actually hear the call, although it didn't get it loud enough to where it was normal-  did you turn up the sound while on a call or leave it be, with the ringer in 'settings' set all the way to the left?  I'm gonna keep playing with it- but it's now where I'd say it's half volume- at least hear-able!

    I have also just recently noticed that problem as well (it almost seems like it just started occuring right after we were Upgraded from Apple IOS 5.1 to Apple IOS 5.1.1).

    I'm quite new to the world of iPhones so excuse me if I get the terminology wrong.

     

    What I did was turn the ringer volume in settings all the way off.  Then in a call I used the volume buttons to turn up the earpiece volume so it was as loud as I needed.  Then ater the call I used the volume buttons again to turn the ringer volume back to where it was (before I turned it off in settings).  Then I made another call to make sure it was all still working.

     

    Odd that a bug like this, on the fundamental part of the phone, doesn't get an immediate response from someone official even if it's just to say "it's a bug, turn the ringer volume off and back on again to fix" or whatever.

     

    I'm still on 5.1.

    i ended up taking my iphone to the genius bar and got it replaced. the volume is fine now!

    Here's a fix I figured out (for those that use bluetooth):

     

    I use a bluetooth stereo headset for everything from taking calls to listening to music/podcasts/etc.  I found that using my headphone jack would kill the sound (or so I thought, it made whatever app I used really soft).  Anywho I turned off bluetooth on my iphone (4), reset, and it worked.

    Welcome Adrian262, I just want to let you know that this is a Peer to Peer Forum, and is not a Peer to Apple Forum just so you are aware that unless there is a Hot Topic of Kind, that everyone else here is An Apple User and NOT an Apple Employee. That said, I recently noticed this problem after Installing 5.1.1 as an Upgrade (which under most conditions is an okay way to Upgrade unless you are testing IOS Betas as part of the Apple IOS Developer Program) which is located at http://developer.apple.com/ (If going From Release to Beta, Beta to Beta, And/Or Beta to Release, than a Restore is Recommended).

    it happen to me i think last year,  theres only 3 ways to solve this problem,

     

    1st~ bring it to the nearest apple store or apple dealers

     

    2nd~ everytime when i making a call, clean up your ears ( mean both ears) cause it happened to me once becos my ears too dirty..

     

    3rd~ aim and stick your ear as hard as u can to the speaker, remember to position it right, the whisper sound will become louder a little, at least better then nothing right?
