I am trying to edit Haskell files with Text Edit. However when I save the file it automatically adds .txt or .rtf and won't let me use .txt. Even when I go into finder and change the file extension it immediately changes it back to .rtf or .txt. It works when I save perl files. How do I get Text Edit to save Haskell files? I am using Lion.

You write that TextEdit won't let you use .txt. But I think that is a typo.
Haskell files usually end in .gs.
Be sure that when you save the file, you set TextEdit for plain text.
I just created and saved a .gs file with no problem using TextEdit.

I meant to say that it won't let me save files with a .hs extension. It will let me save files with a .gs extension, however the compiler my professor has us using does not recognize the .gs extension and won't compile the program. I am using the Glasgow Haskell Compiler and it will only take .hs files. Thanks!
Don't use TextEdit for source code files. No good will come of that. Use TextWranger or Xcode instead.

I agree TextWrangler is a better choice for source code.
If you insist on using TextEdit, uncheck Preferences > Open and Save > Add ".txt> extension to plain text files.
