Safari keeps freezing in gmail and on random sites

For some reason safari is acting weird. It will let me log onto gmail but as soon as i try to click an email it freezes up. Also when i click a link in vimeo it freezes up as well. I have to force quit and then re open the broswer. I use firefox to get around it but sometimes that acts up too. Do they need to release a new patch or something? I jsut want to know why did this start acting this way. All my software is up to date jsut to let you know and accessing safari on my ipad works jsut fine as well. I am using a imac to try to access my email and thats where the problems seem to be.

Hi...

Most likley just some troubleshooting will help.

Just to make sure your Mac is not infected with the flashback trojan (malware) install the Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 8

That will remove variants of the malware.

Restart your Mac after the update is installed, try accessing your gmail.

If you still have problems accessing your gmail, from your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab the click Details.

Type google in the search field top right corner of hte window then click Remove All > Done.

Back to your Safari menu bar, click Safari > Empty Cache

Quit then relaunch Safari. Try gmail ... emptying the cache should help the vimeo issue as well.

Thanks for the response Carolyn but none of these solutions worked. I clicked the link you sent and downloaded the software but since i have OS X 10.7.3 verison it won't let me install the update. It says i must have 10.6 to install the computer. I tried both the privacy tab and empty cache on gmail and they did not work either. I can get into gmail its just when i click on one of the emails to open it up it gives me the beachball of death. Got any more tricks up your sleeve?

Hi..

Try this removal tool just to be on the safe side > \Flashback Removal Tool - F-Secure Weblog : News from the Lab

BTW, where you see System Requirements v10.6.8 on the right side of the page at the Java link I posted, that means that is the minimum requirements. Meaning it can be installed on a Mac running v10.6.8 or later. You should be able to download and installl that update. When the download starts you'll see the downloads icon top right corner of your Safari menu bar. It will have a blue startus bar. The JavaForMacMacOSX10.6.dmg can be found in your Downloads folder. Just double click that. (I had no problem installing that update on my Mac running v10.7.3).

There's an alternative to using web based email. If you aren't aware, you can access your Gmail account via Mac Mail instead of having to deal with a browser.

Launch Mac Mail. From that menu bar click Mail > Preferences then select the Accounts tab then the Account Information tab.

Click + under Accounts in the panel on the left. Enter your name, Gmail user name and password, click Create.

No more having to access Gmail via Safari.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

  • Be sure your Mac is shut down.
  • Press the power button.
  • Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
  • Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.
