The right speaker on my Macbook 2.0 sounds distorted. I went to the nearest Apple Store to do an exchange bringing my iPod along to compare the sound quality with the other Macbooks there. They all had the same right speaker distortion. To take it further, I tried an old Powerbook. No problems at all. Clean sound from both speakers. I just cant see all of those Macbooks having defective right speakers. Assembly or Software problem? What do you guys think?
please see my previous posts in this thread. I had three repairs that didn't change anything and two replacements. I am now on my third MBP which doesn't have the speaker distortion anymore. The whole process took me 2 weeks and several trips to the Apple Store. Now I am happy.
I figured I'd weigh in on this thread to give some folks hope. I too struggled from the distorted speaker and have been following this thread. I finally decided to send my machine in. (It was also very hot. It gave my neice a blister when she crawled over to touch it.)
I sent the machine in. They took it no problem.
The received the machine and the next day they put it on hold as they waited for a part.
A week later I just bought a MacBook to hold me over. (It's nice)
After three weeks, I called them and told them, "I've been very patient as I know there are a lot of machine in there right now. Can you tell me when they are expecting to receive my order?"
They put in a request and told me to call back in 48 hours.
I called back and they said, "Your part should come in on Friday the 18th. IT will be repaired and sent then."
This morning (the 18th) I looked online. The part had been received, the machine repaired and sent. I was expecting it Monday but it just got here to my home.
I opened it up and was reminded at how beautiful that big glossy screen in. I am glad to have it back, but was worried if the fix had really worked. I opened it up and started the machine. THen, I played some tunes and did a quick iChat with a friend and everything sounds great. THe Right speakers sounds MUCH better. I've been running Photoshop and iPhoto for 10 minutes and the machine is not too hot at all!! I am really, really satisfied. (Even though it took nearly 4 weeks)
Pretty much everything. I also got the note about a new logic board and new install disks.
One more piece of advice. Before I sent the machine in I cleaned off my whole desktop. Right in the middle I made a text file and an example of audio that sounded bad. The note said, in a very kind way, "Dear Repairman, YOu will see below this note a mp3 file that clearly shows what the problem is. Will you please be sure to play this file before you send it back to me as repaired. If it doesn't sound right, please try something else or send me a new machine. If it comes back not right, I'll just have to send it back. I know you have a lot of repairs, thank you for taking the time with mine."
I don't know if that helped at all, but my machine sounds good.
My machine was replaced in part because of the audio. I had the speaker problem and a screen problem right out of the box. Sent it in for repair before I got much use out of it. They replaced a bunch of speaker related parts, but it had the same problem when it came back. New problems (mainly heat) cropped up in that time and so I asked for a replacement (or loaner, their choice), so that I wouldn't have to be without my business-critical laptop any more.

my right speaker is dead! nothing not even a sqeak, not even a distorted sound!
god knows for how long it hasn't been working now. you see, I had my mbp connected to a stereo, so I wasn't really using the speakers, but it kinda seemed weird that the opening chime started coming out of the left speaker only...
and voila! my right bloody speaker is dead... i tried squeezing the casing around it just to see if it's a matter of bad cable contact, but nope, it did nada!
and you see, the ***** is that I am in Cyprus, and the mac support here is more or less, non existent! I am calling the "mac dealer" tomorrow to see what he's going to say... but I'm not keeping my hopes high...
ok, tried to go to sleep but the idea of paying approximately 3200USD (yes, because they can here) to get this machine and not being able to use it to the max really disturbs me...
if anyone has anything in mind which could help please... erm HELP?!
Can anyone confirm that this is a housing issue?
I had my MLB replaced and now there is no whine whatsoever - but I have the right speaker distortion issue.
I don't want to send it in again in case I get a whiney MLB replacement along with the audio assembly that some have had?
This is most likely a housing issue - I have had two MBP's and both have had this issue. One week 11 and one week 29. It is a known issue and apple seems to not want to acknowledge it, which makes it a huge annoyance. I've learned to deal with it. Sending my mac in 7 times for various issues and then getting a brand new replacement with the same problems leads me to believe that our problems are "within spec" by apple. Which is B.S. It's more of nuisance for me anxiously waiting for a fixed mbp then using it with these issues at this point in time.
Yes, it's a housing issue. Please read my above posts. This problem can only be fixed if you do it yourself or Apple replaces the whole machine that doesn't have the flaw
Thank you all for your postings, this is VERY informative. Here is my experience:
I got my MBP 10 days ago and noticed the right speaker distortion right away. In comparison, my 4 year old Powerbook G4 sounds great! I went to the Chicago Apple Store but the Geniuses there were not so helpful. They were first in denial, especially as they compared it to another MBP in the store, which had the same problem. They said 'it's by design'!!!.
Finally I got them to agree it's pretty bad and they told me to send it back to Apple as it's less than 2 weeks old and I bought it online from Apple. That's what I'm doing now. Will ship everything back tomorrow. I'll send a letter along asking them to address the issue before I reconsider buying a MBP again. Hopefully my G4 will still last for a while!
