Have used my Altec Lansing for a couple of years on my PC and now that I converted to Apple and hte Mac Mini, they do not appear to work. I plugged them into the audio output at the back. Anyone know why the sound is NOT now coming through the speakers?

Which Altec Lansing's do you have?
Are you sure that they are plugged into the Audio Output (Headphone) jack and not the Audio Input jack?
Also, Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

Strange, this seems to be a fairly common problem in Lion, not sure what it's about, but I suspect upgrading from some subset of a previous OS. ???
This may help:
When I am in "Utilities", the options listed are automatically ticked as "mute" - I simply un ticked them and got sound!
