remove bullets in Mail

Could someone tell me how to remove a list (be it a numbered list or a bulletted list) from Mail?

I know how to stop the numbering (hit return twice) but to remove the list entirely... no idea! I've tried reducing indent etc. but without success. Control shift return simply adds a carriage return without reducing the indent.

All thoughts gratefully received. I've searched on-line and in the forums but with no success.

Thanks in advance!

Proof Apple is going Microsoft. Apple is ignoring their quality interface design roots, and is ignoring their users. The age of this issue, how it's resistance spans multiple OS upgrades, are further proof and reason why my next pc will be a PC.

My solution is,

  • to <CUT> entire line except final space - the invisible <cr> character.
  • delete rest of line
  • <PASTE> on a non-bulletted line.

Poop! Even this dialog box has the feature we're asking about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please don't quote a long block of text; already read the thread, thanks. Fairly obviously that Mail doesn't have a means of removing an entire bulleted list.

I pointed out that elvines had already provided a partial solution that got lost in the noise. For me, his technique removes both the bullet and the indent, and it works by using [fn + delete], not just the [delete] key on its own.

If that doesn't work for you, then there's another issue going on that is specific to you.

Edward, any luck finding a solution? I also have the "issue [that is] specific to [you]."

The "cntrl + return" produces the same results you describe -- bullet gone but item still indented. Combining this with the "fn+delete" just adds the bullet back.

The double hard return doesn't end a bulleted list for me unless the paragraph below the bullet has not been formated -- indented or a bulleted paragraph.

Thanks Daddyo21. That does indeed work if you want to remove the whole bulleted list. So thanks for that. It's a bit laborious and crazy that you have to go through all that simply to remove them (especially, say, when on this forum you can simply click or un-click the bullets). Hopefully Apple will improve things sometime soon...

I tried to find a solution for this already some years ago - but could not find anything.

It is ridiculous that Apple comes up with such a functionality which cannot be undone.

Very frustrating.

It seems those developers do not evey use their own applications for commercial purposes - they probably use Outlook instead...

PS - the only solution I have is to copy the text in the bullet list

then go below to a line without bullet list and past it by using the "past and match style" command.

then delete the bullet line... easy?

Thanks,

While this (or the option/alt for some) will END a bulleted list, there still is no simple/elegant solution to REMOVE bullets from an existing list nor 'break' a list between the first or last bullet line if you wish to insert non-bulleted text (or 'demote' bulleted lines between same.

Other than the copy/cut and paste special dance described earlier.

Basically this whole list chain exists because Mail doesn't let you to un-indent you way out of the list function. Which is a pretty common feature in rich text editors most of us have used elsewhere.

I know how to stop the bullet list, this is not the issue.

The issue that I face often is that I write up a bullet list but then decide that some text is not required in the bullet list anzmore but would like to use the text in the normal part text instead.

Hence I want to turn a line on the bullet list into a normal line instead.

Initial

  • Text Row 1
  • Text Row 2
  • Text Row 3

Intended change:

  • Text Row 1
  • Text Row 2

Text Row 3

and this I could only achieve but cut/past match style

Well, I was hoping that Mavericks would solve the Mail bullets problem. But sadly, no. The problem is there - but now it appears to be worse...

So, just to recap: The problem is *not* how to stop a bulleted list whilst typing but where you want to retain the bulledd list above (that you do by simply pressing return twice).

The problem is that, once you have a bulleted list, how do you remove the bullets in their entirity (because you no longer want *any* bullets in your email. Above there had been a suggestion of cut and paste-and-match-style. This worked previously. Now, however, when you paste you simply get the bulleted list back but slightly smaller!

Any thoughts? Am I alone in thinking that this is utterly crazy?

Hi all,

I believe, having run into this problem myself this morning, that the solution is as follows:

  • Make the relevant bulleted line the last line in the list (see below).
  • Select the whole line (see below).
  • Select "Decrease indent" from the Format > Indentation menu (or hit "[").

To select the whole line, triple-click anywhere in the line.

To make the line the last line in bulleted list, move the cursor to the end of the line and hit "Return" twice.
