Back again - come across this issue again. To refresh:
The first time was when i was installing the pro tools update 10.2 - but after restarting and trying again I didn't have the same issue.
THIS TIME the issue occured when installing the pro tools update 10.3 (which was meant to be released for ML compatibility?! Ironic eh?)
So everytime I try to run this installer ALL ram is pretty much used up but I can't see which process is doing this . . . which is rather odd. I have contacted Avid and they have offered me no useful advice and have stopped replying to my mail. So I'm here failing to update the program.
Spec:
Mac Pro
3.33 GHz 20GB RAM (<- ALOT OF RAM) Mountain Lion
480GB SSD (Boot Drive)
1TB Hard drive
Important to note when viewing screen shots - when installing pro tools the SSD boot drive randomly eats about 70GB of it;s harddrive space but when I restart it re-appears. This is exactly the same symptomns I had when performing the 10.2 install. See below screen shot during install and screen shot after a reboot (before/after install)
Any help would be extremely grateful - thanks guys,
Matt
Hi Matt, did you solve your problem? I have the same problem and also have half of my 160Gb disk free. In my case it normally happens while browsing...
Hey jose
I managed to solve it by uninstalling and then doing the update rather than trying to run the update without uninstalling first. Think it was a case of it just not being able to rewrite over the files so it just went a bit crazy. Hope this helps. What's your issue with? Pro tools or something else?
First off all you must check what uses most of your memory on your mac.
I did that with Terminal comand:
du -sh *
And found out that it was .cleverfiles (more then 250GB)
I did some investigation and found out that it was one inecent backup program Diskdrill that was making backups for my files on my mac. So whenever I deleted a file this program saved it. So there is no chance to make any free space while this program on mac. So I had to delted this backup files to make free space and Diskdrill itself.
When I put comand:
sudo rm -r /.cleverfiles
to terminal, everything came back to normal, no more copies, backups or duble files.
Try to check if you have any backup program like Disk drill. And choose another way to back up your mac, becouse this is going to kill your mac...
I had a similar problem. The error essentially means your computer is out of memory. Most likely, some app/program you're running is buggy and has what's called a memory leak. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB free for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data.
First, reboot. That will temporarily free up some space. Then use Apple's Activity Monitor to learn which program on your computer is the culprit. From your desktop find Activity Monitor (Command+F) and double-click on it. When the Activity Monitor window appears click on the %CPU tab @ the top. This will show the problem app using up the most space. I had to let it run a little while before the problem app appeared and saw how quickly my memory was running out. The problem turned out to be a third party app I rarely used, so I deleted it and it's asscociated folders under /Library/Application Support. Did this both in the User library and the Mac HD library. Shut down my laptop and restarted. Problem solved. Cheers.

Thanks SO much!
Activity monitor showed Safari was the thief.
Didn't want to re and re Safari but recalled having Disk Doctor added recently so uninstalled.
Then noted I had CleanMyMac so tried it, it offered an update so I downloaded the update.
It immediately (I don't remember selecting this) did an auto-clean.
I thought that was enough playing around so I shut down, re-booted and checked the Activity monitor.
It WAS OK but now shows Safari at 104% of CPU, Real Mem 12 GB Virt Mem 26 gb
So now what???
Any suggestions?
Please start your own threads and don't post to this old one.
Happy to oblige, but why?
The answer is here and the respondent deserves thanks and credit.
Why have multiple threads on the same subject - is that not counterproductive?
Hmmm
I am having a slimmer issue. I have no memory and I can't get into iPhotos to delete picture so I can free up memory what can I do?
