how do I merge 2 cells in Numbers '09 (v.2.1)

How can I merge 2 cells in Numbers? I liked the Excel feature of "merge and center" or "merge and leftg justify". Is there something like that. I realize that when I type, it will flow over into the next cell. But, if I want to show a box around it, then it messes that up.

Hi Julie,

Adding to Wayne's comments...

Alignment within the merged cell is set using the buttons in the format bar. You can see them in Wayne's screen shot, located immediately below the yellow Function button.

Be aware that merging cells vertically (eg. select cells A5 and A6, then merge) will prevent any sort that includes one, some or all of the rows containing merged cells. Merging cells in Header rows should not affect this, as Header rows are not included in sorts of the table.

Barry

Julie,

As you become more familiar with the differences between Numbers and Excel, you will depend less on Splitting and Merging cells. In general I find that I rarely need to merge or split cells. It's usually more effective to trim the table to the smallest possible size and to do your notes and even some of your labels in Text Boxes. The problem with merging and splitting cells that Barry mentioned usually strikes long after you forget that you did the merge or split and you don't have a clue why you can't sort.
